Google works (at least in part) by looking at how many other sites, especially other popular sites, contain links to your page.
Does the film festival have a site ? Get a link placed there. Do you know any other places that might put a link to your film ? Ask them. Can you get any media coverage from online organisations ? Every link to your page will help it .
Alternatively, feed the pigeons ...

Google is fine, it just takes a few days to find your site. You should also include as many keywords when you register your site with google, and of course you should write as many META TAGS as possible into your page headers. The META TAGS shoud match the keywords you registered with google. Say, for an instance:
<METANAME="description" content="sidney, film, festival, sydney film, sydney film festival, acting, performing, stage">
Just fill them in and you should be able to find your site.
I also depende an how your site is resolved through your META TAGS, if a site paid google to be listed first and they have the same META TAGS as you, they will be shown first.
Hope it works for you

I would suggest doing a google search on "search engine submission tips" and having a good read on how the process works. And if you manage to get yourself a good listing on google, let me know how!
