Google not picking up links to my site?

I am trying to get my businesses' website to rank higher in Google. When I use the function in Google (link: www.anniqueuk.co.uk) to check how many sites are linking to the site it says it can't find any? I know of plenty of sites that do link to your site eg.

http://www.e-klets.com
http://www.ukkasie.com/wie.asp
http://www.annique.com/distributors/international.html

Any ideas why this could be?
Any other tips on how to increase the site ranking would be much appreciated!
The site address is http://www.AnniqueUK.co.uk

There are lots of things to write.  I am unble to provide everything here. But once I have used this service to do the job for my own site. They have free tools. I had used them.
http://www.netmechanic.com/promote.htm
The main parts are
#  Keyword Popularity - Gives you quantitative feedback on your keywords so you can select keywords that bring relevant qualified traffic to your site.
# META Mechanic - Creates Title and Meta tags that will increase your search engine ranking. You don't have to be an expert in HTML, we'll generate the tags for you.
# Page Primer - Learn secrets to improve search engine ranking. This page evaluator reviews your Web page and tells you specific ways to improve your search engine position.
# Search Engine Starter - Search engine submission software that keeps you in control. Submit any page in your site to your choice of 100 popular engines.
# Search Engine Tracker - Track your progress with regular search engine position reports. Watch your search engine rankings rise over time!
Everything should be done correctly and efficiently.

Your site is showing up in Google, so it does have your business's site. in the database.  That's a good thing to start with.

There are some generally agreed upon not-so-good ways to get higher rankings, being:
1) Submitting your site manually to search engines.
2) Paying someone else to submit your site to search engines.
3) Relying on what is in your meta tags.

With that out of the way, there are some things that you *can* work on.
1) What's inside the title tags counts.  Make sure the first two or three words of your page's title are the most important.  Right now, that's "Anniquek's UK Store".  If those aren't the words that you think people are going to be searching for, you may want to change them.
2) The first paragraph of text matters.  If you search for yourself in google, you'll see that the description that Google is picking up is actually your navigation bar right now.  Since these happen to be a lot of your keywords, that's not such a bad thing.
3) Who links to you / who you link to matters.  You get cred for being linked by popular sites and vice versa.
4) This last one is not proven, just speculation, but I find that the more you search for yourself in Google's various programs, the more often you start to show up.

For your reference, here is what Google publishes on the subject: http://www.google.com/webmasters/

Hope that is some new information!
How long have you had the links up there? I know it can take months for the Google bots to come around to my site. I had one site that linked to me that took like four months to show up on google. If the spiders haven't hit those sites since your link has been posted, then you won't be getting any boost to PageRank. I'm not an SEO expert, but I think that the fact that these site have a PageRank of no more than 5, means that they won't be Botted very frequently, but I could be wrong (my site's only at PR4).

Good Luck!

Thanks for all the responses. The link form http://www.annique.com/distributors/international.html have been there for a good few months. The pages that contain the links are picked up by google but the links are not. any one go an idea why?
The reason google doesn't show any back links is because i believe you need to have a back link from an anchor site (site with high google ranks). It would be very inefficient to catalog every link to and from every page. So instead, i've found that google has a list of anchor sites that are reputable pages, and the backlinks from these pages boost your rank, and are counted in the backlink count, as compared to a link from "Joe's homepage!" Not to say that the people linking back to you are not important, but Google doesn't have the power to catalog every link on the net. If you get something like microsoft or CNN to reference you, then that link would be counted, as the function that tells you whos linking to you, really only tells you reputable links.

hope that helps,
Jordan
Jordan, I don't know if what you say is true. Most of the linkbacks that show up for my site are coming from sites with PageRank of 5 (PR5). One of them is just someone's blog site. Try doing a link:www.sitemaker1.com (not my site, but a very good example... I think they do SEO stuff as well). There are some fairly obscure web sites listed which linkback to that site.

gb225450, what you are saying kind of matches up with my comment then, does it not? A link *may* have to be up for quite some time on a PR5 site before it gets re-indexed (that is, before you see it in a linkback query to Google). You may have no alternative but to wait. In the mean time, check out the links from pinaldave, and Jordan does have a good point with getting quality links. The higher the quality of linkbacks you get, the more frequently they'll be re-indexed, and you'll get more PR to boot!

hi gb225450,

I know this question is closed, recently I had a similar problem, not being cached by google, I fixed the problem by creating static header tags for every page. Previously I was dynacally building head sections using serverside DHTML.
For your page that you posted in this thread, http://www.annique.com/distributors/international.html  Annique.com - International distributors page, I would do something like this in the head section.

<head>
<title>Annique.com - International distributors page</title>
  <!---------------------------------------------------
  Page specific META tags and hidden <H> tags that
  emphasise and re-iterate funcionality of this page
  ----------------------------------------------------->
  <meta content="International distributors,Annique,World of Annique,Skin care,health,salons,price list,whats new,specials" name="keywords">
  <meta content="Information page about Annique, contains a comprehensive index of international distributors of Annique products worldwide" name="description">
  <meta name="author" content="Your name">
  <meta content="all" name="audience">
  <meta content="index,all" name="robots">
  <meta content="15 days" name="revisit-after">
  <!--
  <h2>Information Page</h2>
  <h2>International distributors page</h2>
  <h2>Annique worldwide index of international distributors</h2>
  <h2>http://www.annique.com/distributors/international.html</h2>
  -->
</head>

Using this simple template, resulted in rocketting to the number one position on most major search engines, within 4-6 weeks.

The google link: command is famous for not listing all the links to sites. I have never seen a reason for this command not working, but I would guess that Google do not want us to do extensive link analysis. I suggest you encourage people to link to you on a regular basis, and keep on checking your ranking. When you rank high you know you have enough links!

There is much more to search engine optimization than 'getting links'. The best resource  I've found that covers 'everything you need to know about SEO' is the Planet Ocean book:

http://www.321books.co.uk/mega-search-engines/planet-ocean.htm

It may be that your keywords are used by too many competitors. To find useful keywords without much competition, use a tool like Wordtracker:

http://www.321books.co.uk/mega-search-engines/wordtracker.htm
gauer's Answer Said:

Since PR values are a result of IBLs, Google decided to give them their own name and refers to inbound links as backlinks. As part of the toolbar there is a quick lookup of the number of backlinks that Google reports for the page that is currently being viewed in the browser. This search can also be done without the aid of the toolbar by simply typing "link:http://www.yourURL.com" into the Google search box.

But all I can find in my google tool bar is the PageRank not the link back count!
I know this question is closed now, but if you want an easy description of how Google calculates Page Rank (and how that relates to the toolbar PR) along with some tips for upping your visibility then see http://iprcom.com/papers/pagerank/index.html

I'm biased of course as I wrote it ;-) but several people have told me it's a very easy read and it has lots of examples.
If the link is based on a image i am not sure that google counts it.
This might be of interest.

Seems to be some solid thinking on how PageRank seemed to change all of a sudden late last year (the "Florida" update). Introduces a new concept "Topic-Sensitive PageRank". A good read.

(And, also award me the points :))
The best way to be first on Google list is that:
- Every morning when you start to work search for your site through the google 50 or 100 times, and after one month you'll be first on the list

link: www.anniqueuk.co.uk dosen't work propper. Try this to find out how many sites link 2 yours:

+"anniqueuk.co.uk" -site:anniqueuk.co.uk

this lists all sites with links 2 your sites without your own links.

Results 1 - 8 of about 12 for +"anniqueuk.co.uk" -site:anniqueuk.co.uk
I'm taking a wonderful free online search engine optimization course  (http://www.gnc-web-creations.com/seo-optimization.htm), and I can see a few problems with your site right off the bat:

In your header, where you list your stylesheet, it looks like you've added a bunch of keywords to that area, instead of in the metatags. Keep your stylesheet declaration separate from your metatags.

Google doesn't like Javascript so much. If you're going to use Javascript for your navigation, make sure you also include text-based links (usually at the bottom of the page), and use absolute references. Google likes that better, especially for backlinks within your site.

Your keywords don't match your content. Google looks for keyword relevancy and density--a matching of keywords in your metatags with keywords in your main content.

Separate out your formatting from your content--use an external stylesheet. Despite your stylesheets, your table still has lots of deprecated code in it. The more formatting you have internally, the less likely it is that your page will be crawled in its entirety.

Tables should be used for data--it would be good to get used to setting up your pages using CSS.

Google still has problems with dynamic web pages, which is probably why you're not getting the backlinks--even from your own site.

Google loves content. You have lots of links, but very little content, on your home page. It's like your home page is acting as a "splash" page to the rest of your site. Google doesn't like splash pages.

Contact information (name, address, phone number) should be on each page.

Have you submitted your site address to other search engines and free search directories? Many of them feed off each other. Is your site listed with any organizations that list or cover businesses like yours? Have you asked complementary sites to list your site? The more backlinks, the greater the relevancy.

Page rank is only part of the whole organic listing equation. Don't get too wrapped up in it. It's important, but it's not the be-all and end-all.

That's all I can think of for the moment. The more the information on your site is updated, the more the Google crawls your site. My brother-in-law's site, http://patrickwarburton.com , went from #19 in the Google rankings to #9 within 4 days from the time the new site was launched. The next day it was at #8. The next day it was at #7. Within 2 weeks, it was at #5. Now it's holding steady at #4. Using only ethical search engine optimization.
