Windows media player update keeps repeating (KB828026)

Every time I use Windows update, it keeps wanting to install KB828026-Windows Media player security update; even though when you look at the history it says that it was already successfully installed.  (It is now installed 4 times)

I've done a Google search and found various "fixes" for this problem, but none have worked. The most mentioned fix was to search for the file WMP.DLL and delete it, then re-install Windows Media Player 9, and then run the update again. The update installs, then on reboot, I go back to the Windows update site, let it scan, and it says that it needs the update again.

Another fix is to delete a registry key related to the update. I don't remember exactly where it was, but it had the KB # in it (828026) and then MANUALLY download and install the security patch. But even though I'm sure I have the correct download, it gives various error messages referencing "Missing Export DLL" which I'm pretty sure means that it's for a different OS.

WMP 9 is usually difficult to uninstall.   If the above technique didn't work you could try  'System Restore' to a time prior to WMP 9 installation, but using SR has it's obvious disadvantages.

Another method which may work(if the 1st comment didn't) is to delete the file "C:\Windows\System\wmploc.dll".

Sorry I took so long to award the points, as I was away for a few days. Your first suggestion seems to have worked as Windows Update no longer wants to download the KB828026 update, but now there seems to be a new problem:

Every other time I boot, I get a BSOD with 0177: BFF7B018 error message. On reboot, it goes to the start menu and after choosing "Normal" it seems boot just fine. Then after 2 more reboots, it goes back to the same BSOD.

I don't know if this is related or not.
Thank you.
No problem, that's fine!      Thank you.

However, it's EE policy that only one question should be asked in each thread.  May i respectfully suggest therefore, that you resubmit a new thread quoting the above 'error', and you'll get a number of  'experts' that will come forward to help you.   They would consider this thread closed and they wouldn't necessarily 'see it'.

     > I get a BSOD with 0177: BFF7B018 error message <
Did a quick check on it however, and although it's quoted a number of times, there doesn't seem to be any clear-cut solution.
Whatever you decide, i will check this 'error' further!

There are some references here to your  "BSOD with 0177: BFF7B018" error message. If you're running IE6
you could try the 'Repair' that is referred to.

Start > Settings > Crtl Panel > Add/Remove programs > IE  > Tools  > Add/Remove,  then click 'Repair':

Also found a reference to your error(& several others!) here, which may be worth following up:

There have been suggestions here and elsewhere of the incompatibilty of WinMe and Norton antivirus products. You may
wish to temporarily disable any Norton product in your SCU (MSCONFIG), and see if there's an improvement.
