Congratulations to our new Genius—matthewspatrick

The question that pushed him over the top occurred at 21:14 PDT on September 21 for those who had been betting--and it appears that brettdj was the closest to the moment.

Patrick started out as a strong contributor, and maintained a steady pace until he reached the pinnacle of Excel achievement. And in last month, he, Kevin, Harish and a fourth guy were all in the top 15 for the entire site. Not bad seeing as how those points came from one of the less-active TAs!

I'll be adding some commentary later, but wanted to get the congrats thread out right away.

Woohoo Patrick!

Congrats Patrick,

Although I have spent most of my "Expert" time with you in the Access TA, I continually watch the Excel TA from a distance to build up my knowledge, and you certainly have allot of that in both TA's.

Dave.

Congrats, Patrick

You are hard to keep up with, and on top you are very kind along the way.
A true representative of how the upper level experts should behave-assist-guide-set examples to be followed, to make this TA a nice area to participate in.

Congrats and Thanks

Patrick,

I took note of you from the moment you got here and pinched my first ever attempt at an Excel/Outlook solution ... plus I have to say that its pretty hard not to notice a guy capable of keeping even Brad and Kevin honest on answer hit rates

Beyond your excellent coding layout and left field solutions  its been a pleasure to discuss approaches and issues with you, you've always been polite and helpful. A huge asset in this TA

Best wishes to you & your family

Cheers

Dave
Patrick,

A very well deserved recognition. The common theme seems to be your interpersonal skills. The technical skills are painfully obvious but it's how you are consistently polite with a nice dose of humor thrown in that make those days and nights starring at QP more enjoyable. Stuff like this little gem in response to a quippy little dude who thought he had figured out the auto loan payment calculation equivalent of Schrödinger’s Equation: "I am a bit tired and humor-impaired this morning, so my mirth detector may not be functioning. That was a joke, right? Right?" As it turns out, that experience turned against you and the quippy little dude took the prize with a non-answer...but that's not why we're here.

Patrick, you are one of the reasons this TA is so well respected among those who frequent it as well as the other experts. Brad sets the tone and cleans up the goofs, but you provide the daily content that gives the TA it's mature and welcome character. I have always enjoyed participating with you...even when you clean my clock.

To the future and learning more about MS Query, web queries, and Regular Expressions!

Kevin
Congratulations Patrick :)

I have fulfilled your old need.. (getting points in Outlook TA lol)
Patrick, I think you have reached Hall of Fame (<=100) this month itself right ?

May be or not..
Congratulations for that too :)
Congratulations Patrick!!!
indeed impressive you managed to keep up with Kevin and Brad (and somewhere I remember that you even beat one on monthly basis somewhere)

Thanks for being here and your contributions

Jeroen

Patrick,

Many congratulations Genius. A well deserved accolade.

Patrick(ab)
Great work Patrick, your answers are always top quality, and you deserve all the praise written here.

Keep up the good work!

Geoff.
Congratulations Patrick,

Couldn't agree more with everything written above (and probably everything to be written below).

Much of what I have learnt in Excel has come from viewing your different answers to many (many, many!) questions. So a BIG thanks from me :)

I just have to keep an eye out for those Pivot Table questions ;-)

Wayne
Great Job, Patrick!

Your hard work is definately noticed around here, from answering question after question to your recent clean-up work.  Your dedication to the site is extremely commendable considering your busy family life and job schedule, the one-time askers as well as repeat offenders appreciate it as well I'm sure!

Keep it up, you're an asset to the TA!
Matt
Patrick:
where will be the party? at what time? where can I declare the travel expenses I made to get to your party?
As one of the "repeat offenders" Matt mentioned, I can definitely testify to the appreciation felt for Patrick's many contributions here.  Having been the recipient of Patrick's expertise on many occasions, I have to add my thanks to one of my favorite Experts and a true professional - Great Job, Patrick!!

Jeff
Jeff,

When are you going to start earning some points? You're the only one participating in these congrats threads who has never gotten a single point.

Kevin
Kevin: Good point! At least he earned one point from you with this remark. Jeff is perhaps a good politician, be polite to experts to get quicker and better answers although I agree with you that he would be able to give some support to earn his marks. (and the second point from me. now it should get visible in his status which might get him infected with the EE-virus:))

Jeroen
He has certainly earned my respect and does get the best treatment. But then, don't we try to give everyone the best treatment?

I wonder what happened to Brad...he was going to post some additional observations.

Kevin
Every one gets the best treatment only in some cases we are able to give a more personal twist which ofcourse is extra service:)

Im not sure what happend to Brad, I think he has difficulties making a good choice between the impressive answers Patrick give here over the years.
Dang Kevin, maybe I'd give it a go once you, Patrick, Brad, Jeroen and a few others, too ;--) all retire ... but more seriously, I'd love to have the time to participate on "the other side" of EE and maybe some day will. In the meantime, since I'm in business for myself (and pedaling as fast as I can at the moment), I have to put bread on the table first ... ;--)  ... but still wanted to add my 2 cents worth for Patrick's achievement (so ummm, forgive me if I am treading on hallowed grounds by posting here [with no points in my account] ...)

Nevertheless, I feel challenged by you and Jeroen trying to "bait me", so maybe I'll get there sooner than later but don't know if I'll ever have the time (or expertise) to give you guys any serious competition ...

And Jeroen, it's that "personal twist" you all give that makes EE such a great place to find answers ... I enjoy the repartee as much as I appreciate the solutions.

Best to all of you,

Jeff
Congratulations, Patrick!

Well deserved and well earned.  Thanks for all of your great contributions and keep them coming!

Jim
Jeff,

Here's the bottom line: earn 10,000 points in any one calendar month and you officially become an expert (you don't have to pay that month's fee of $10.) Earn only 3,000 points each calendar month from that point on to maintain your expert status. Bread is about $3 a loaf ($24 if you live in Silicon Valley, New Your City, or New Orleans) so that's the equivalent of about three loaves of bread on your table each month.

Whatever you do you are more than welcome here :-)

Kevin
So, after month 1, interpolating, two 500 point questions = 1 loaf of bread - who knew??  Thanks for the EE economics lesson (and the welcome), Kevin - I knew I could count on you to break that down for me ;--)

Jeff
> When are you going to start earning some points? You're the only one participating in these congrats threads who has never gotten a single point.

Whack! Take that   :)

Actually Jeff I have to agree, you are pretty well qualified to have a crack at this when you get the time
Jeffery,

A little secret: we actually get 4x the posted points if we get an A grade. So that's one 500 and one 250 point question or one 250 point question per loaf. What do you think now?

I heard someone say when you get to 3 million you get a car but no one has ever confirmed that. Brad?

Kevin
> I heard someone say when you get to 3 million you get a car but no one has ever confirmed that. Brad?

Cool!  Matchbox, or Hot Wheels?

Hm, wonder who that fourth guy was :)  It's not just Excel any more, though--I've started making a concerted effort
to participate in the Access TA, and I monitor the other Office-based TAs and Visual Basic.

Carsten, thanks for the kind words.  The tone really comes from the top--I just try to act the way people

RegExp looks very tasty.  I think I'll concede MS Query and web queries to someone else.  Doesn't Harish
need to start developing an Obscure Genius Skill (Responsibility #1 in https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/21453373/Congratulations-to-our-new-Genius-zorvek.html)

Thanks, Jeff.  Jeff instigated what is still my most significant work with class modules, and forced me to
learn things about CommandBarButton events that were just plain bewildering.  Now start answering
some questions :)

Thanks, Jim.  If nothing else, I will always be grateful to you for showing me how to force PivotTable DATA

to try *that*!

Agreed! It's next on my list and I've been trying it out without much success as you may have noticed: http:Q_21569956.html#14933812. But I'm learning...

I'm guessing its:
 https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/21157698/export-the-users-from-a-distribution-list-Outlook.html

Taken from:
 http://ee.hastalavidas.com/Q_21570067/DaveAndPatrickM.html

Which was created by:
 http://ee.hastalavidas.com/Q_21570067/FindLikeQuestions.xls

Which was motivated by:
A couple hours of boredom between online poker and a visitor that just left

:)

The code does take a couple minutes to run, as it takes a couple seconds to retrieve each page containing questions.  I still haven't figured out a good way to multi-thread from vba
I honestly thought the two of you would have been in more questions together than that, though.
Matt - I tried to read your code but it sent me into a tailspin

Plus I've had quite a few beers watching our Australian Football Grand Final (if we were American maybe we'd call it Word Series Australian Football). So I'm going to turn on the XBOX instead, play some Halo 2,  and decipher this little beauty on Monday
glad you are not American or perhaps German, then it could be Excel Series Australian Football. Do you think there are other variants on MS-Office products?
Dave- no need to really decipher it.  The sorting module is some string array sorting code I grabbed a while back as part of a full module of array sorting code by Phillippe Lord.  You won't find a quicker routine than the sort routines he has there!! A link to his site is included at the top of the module.  The web module is code I grabbed from who-knows-where, taking advantage of the wininet API.  While I can trace it and follow what it is doing, I couldn't write that from scratch if I tried, unlike the other methods of grabbing internet data.  This way is the only way I've used that hasn't ever errored out.
The last/data module is the code I made up.  It just gets a list of all questions answer/commented/asked by two users and returns the list to 2 string arrays, compares the two and finds like questions, then creates a barebones .html file with a table of all those questions.  The only thing I forgot to include is a duplicate checker, so if Expert1 asks a question and comments in it, and Expert2 participated as well, then it will probably be listed twice :( But since this is only for fun, I didn't want to further clutter the question that night by re-posting updated code.  Also it doesn't include deleted questions, as there is no URL in the page source to associate them with.

Consider this my gift to you, Patrick, for reaching genius.  I made it to find that outlook question Dave was talking about, but sometimes it could be useful when you recognize someone on here and don't know why. If you want any features added to it or changes made and can't figure out how I did it let me know and I'll gladly add them (return details by username, sort differently, etc).  So, Congrats again!

Since I'm commenting again anyways.. to fix the duplicate question thing, change the for first i loop in CompareExperts to:
Dim k As Long, QInfo As String, DupQ As Boolean
 For i = 0 To UBound(Expert1, 1)
  For j = 0 To UBound(Expert2, 1)
   If Expert1(i, 1) = Expert2(j, 1) Then
    DupQ = False
    QInfo = Expert1(i, 3) & "|!|" & Expert1(i, 1) & "|!|" & CStr(i)
    For k = 0 To SameCnt - 1
     If SameQs(k) = QInfo Then
      DupQ = True
      Exit For
     End If
    Next 'k
    If Not DupQ Then
     ReDim Preserve SameQs(SameCnt)
     SameQs(SameCnt) = QInfo
     SameCnt = SameCnt + 1
    End If
    Exit For
   End If
  Next 'j
 Next 'i

Thanks, Matt!  I shall definitely check it out--especially the array sorting routines!  (It amazes me that VBA has no basic
array sort.)

David aka BlueDevilFan,

I see you recently hit Sage in Outlook.  Congratulations yourself! :)

Regards,

Patrick
Thanks, Patrick!  I'm trying to keep you in sight on the points chart.  :)  You zoomed right past me earlier this month.
Patrick(m),
As the .xls file really isn't necessary, I've created a file for each of the 3 modules in the file (also allows easier access to the code).  I've also heavily updated the DataStuff module, so now you just enter two experts' usernames to return their similar questions:

http://ee.hastalavidas.com/Q_21570067/DataStuff.bas.txt
http://ee.hastalavidas.com/Q_21570067/SortStuff.bas.txt
http://ee.hastalavidas.com/Q_21570067/WebStuff.bas.txt

I renamed from .bas to .bas.txt so anti-virus programs wont go nuts.  If anyone is copying from the web to vb, remember to remove the attribute vb_name line at the top.

Congratulations BDF on the Outlook Sage!
Thanks, mvidas!

Although it was mentioned above, Patrick recently assumed responsibility for helping to clean up the backlog of open questions. In his low-key way, three months have already been processed. I for one am truly grateful, because clean-up is so needed--yet it lacks the reward of "Good Answer" e-mails. And clean-up has to be done by someone who can tell the good answers from the pretenders.

One of Patrick's more interesting PAQs pondered why the Office suite applications all seem so different:  http:/Q_21571345.html
After much debate on rounding, Kevin promises that rounding last always works: http:/Q_21477888.html then eats his hat in this follow-up: http:/Q_21480878.html
256 columns hath Excel http:/Q_21512620.html (but many more in the next release http://blogs.msdn.com/excel/default.aspx )

In a previous Congrats thread, I teased Kevin by saying that a real Genius needs to develop an arcane specialty possessed by none else. Well with over 100K points in Access, surely the interrelationships between Access and Excel will join PivotTables as Patrick's arcana. Now if the rest of us would get in the habit of saying "Huzzah" to some of Patrick's more brilliant posts, then he'll be relishing his new role as Genius lickety-split.

One of the vexations with EE is that you hardly ever meet people face to face, or even know what they look like. Here is a picture of Patrick with his daughters Grace and Claire http://home.mchsi.com/~byundt/MatthewsPatrick_daughtersGrace_Claire.jpg    But inquiring minds want to know--did participation in Experts-Exchange change his hair color?

Congratulations Patrick!

> It goes down easier with a little tabasco, Kevin :)

No sauce needed. I never ate my hat and never will. I have already had my tombstone in the garage engraved with "I swear that man was rounding upstream somewhere..." I even proved it with his spreadsheet and his data data but somehow I could never get him to implement the "no rounding" approach correctly.

And here is another little tidbit - ever wonder why normal looking numbers sometimes get tagged with junk after about the 8th decimal place? It's because of how Excel/VBA converts to singles and back to doubles again. Turns out Excel/VBA doesn't convert to decimal when moving from single to double but rather just bit copies from the IEEE 32 to the IEEE 64 internal format leaving the low order bits zero. Maybe you all knew that but I didn't until a few weeks ago.

My perception of the comaraderie may be colored by the fact that I'm a relative newcomer, and that
the Access TA doesn't get as much of my attention as does the Excel TA.  I will say this: you and the
other frequent posters there have always treated me with courtesy, and it is kind of a thrill to see
"good solution!" comments coming from people like you who have forgotten more about Access
and SQL than I will ever know.

Regards,

Patrick
Thanks for the kind words Patrick!

I would agree, there are some... not so nice people, but generally we are a happy bunch.

I must admit, Brad does a GREAT job of promoting the comaraderie in Excel, we are however... <hiding> generally leaderless </hiding>

I just wish I could get my head around this Excel thing... I just need to spend some (allot) more time spying on the likes of yourself's comments... :-)

Hip-hip to all of you!

Dave.
matthewspatrick - Congrats on your resent ascension to Genius level.

Brad - I have always had good experiences with you as PE whenever I posted in the Excel TA.  Perhaps I should post here more often.

Thanks, Jim!  I have enjoyed collaborating with you both here and in the Access TA.

Patrick
Congrats again Patrick.. on reaching 1M this year

It seems that you are in a full flow :)
Thanks, Harish :)

Kevin,
Suppose 99 people say you need to eat your hat, but 101 agree with you that it isn't necessary. Please express these results rounded to the nearest whole percentage. Add them up. I think you'll get 101%.
Brad
Why do I subject myself to such abuse. I could be surfing amazon.com or playboy.com but no, I have to hang out here with a bunch of slide rule-carrying, "Excel is a game, isn't it?" nerds.

Rounding before summing is what we did in kindergarten. Here's a little ditty to see how you can really mess up a value when you didn't intend to:

   X = 1.1
   Y = CSng(X) - 1.1 ' Y is now zero, right?
   MsgBox Round(Y * 100000000)

Kevin
Cute photo Patrick  ..... and the kids aren't bad either.
Thanks, Dave :)
Fun Kevin,  you didn't need to use the round
MsgBox Y

so your statement about "is now zero" seems to be incorrect:)

delivers already another result: 2.38418578213384E-08
rounding this, results into 2.

Patrick, Your doing a great job! with cleaning up. Sorry I don't comment on any of your suggestions as it is OK to me.

Jeroen,

I only used ROUND to make the result a wee bit more poignant. It just seemed funnier to me showing a plain 2 after starting with 1.1 (even though there was a multiply by 1E8 in there.)
