Cannot see machines over VPN

When connected to the VPN we are unable to ping any machines on the domain, we are only able to ping machines that are on the same workgroup between the 2 locations. Both locations are on different subnets. Although when I ping a machine on the domain by its IP address it seems to work fine. But when I go to windows explorer and try \\computername\c$  I have no luck or even by doing this by ip. Also in the configuration of the VPN the Netbios is checked. Thanks

Joe,

Try the FQDN of the machines on the other side of the VPN tunnel.  If you are able to ping computername.company.com then everything is working as intended.  WINS would need to be enabled to accomplish the "short" name resolution over the VPN.  Also make sure that the TCP/IP adapter settings on these workstations has the NetBIOS over TCP/IP enabled on them.

I will have to take a look at this when I get home tonight. To explain this in further detail the NetBIOS is checked in site A and Site B. I have tried to join the domain from site B with no luck, it tells me it cannot find DC. I did some thinking and if I remember right I think the DNS in site A is pointing to the ISP on the router I should probley have that pointing back to the DC right???

Thanks,

Joe

Do you guys know why I would be able to ping the machines on the workgroup but not the domain???? I am going to have to try these suggestions on Sunday when I go there. Thanks.

Joe
I is possible that becasuse they are on the Domain that the XP firewall is enabled and not able to ping but the ones on the workgroup are disabled and pingable
