Windows XP - 64 bit OS

I am in the market for a new workstation and notice that many come with the Windows XP 64bit OS.  I have heard many things about running a 64 bit OS including that many applications will not run with a 64 bit OS.  I would like to understand the pros and cons more thoroughly including topics of performance and app compatibility.  Also, I have heard that it is possible to run 32 bit and 64 bit OS's on the same machine with dual processors and I would also like to undertand that in greater detail.

Thanks,

Bill

Wow, typos.
I meant: 'Ideal is when they run 64-bit natively.'

If you like to use win16 application then it might be a good idea to start working with vmware:

Apart from that I fully agree with PowerIT

Nayer & DCreature ,
that is why XP x64 is usually delivered with pre-built workstations: the hardware and drivers are certified. Indeed, not easy in DIY.
That's probably what Bill noticed when shopping around.
Personally I don't have one running. I do have two SQL-servers with 2003 Server x64 and they are very stable and fast. This is also on certified hardware.
