computer shutting down

G'day,

why would a computer keep shutting down on its own please?

maybe it went into hibernation?

Your question is vague. Please provide your manufacturer & model of computer, including the operating system, such as Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP.

ahh sorry,

well, I believe that it goes into hibernation, for you turn the system on and within say 1 min or 2 it does switches itself off. It was doing this, so I re installed the system and now it is just windows xp installed and it is still doing it. As far as manufacturer and model of computer, sorry not sure, where do you wish me to look for this?

regards...............
serial # should be on a label, and the manufacturer should be somewhere on your machine.. like IBM, TOSHIBA, DELL, GATEWAY, WINBOOK, etc.

Does the machine shut down whenthere is no activity or when you are using the system?

if it is the former then go to CONTROL PANEL - POWER OPTIONS, and change the profile to NEVER-NEVER-NEVER.
just shuts down with or without activity

I just put a different monitor on the system and it hasn't shut down yet, could the other monitor cause it to shut down?

i agree with irwinpks ....and meybe it's hardware issue  ... so there is two tools to test hardware and memory try them :
http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp
http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287
Bugger!!

I tell a lie, it has just shut down, but it did last longer
still waiting for make and model.. howz that coming along?
hmm it want stay on long enough to run tests, tried in safe mode and same thing

computer is an intel, does that help?
no...are there any labels / markings on this computer?  desktop/notebook?
sorry to be a pain, but it is a desktop and no markings, but I believe it would be an IBM, I will keep looking, I took off cover and am still looking , but I wreckon it to be an IBM
If it doesn't say IBM on the case. then it is NOT an IBM.. it is a customized compatible system.

Now to get it right for us, you will have to located on the MOTHERBOARD, the name of the manufacturer and model are on it.
I wreckon I have it now, fount the old paper work and on the board is has a G (Gigabyte) 81845 GVM-RZ  then there is a symbol (circle with an arrow pointing to the left in it) then D3306 with a CE near by and the mother board box matches, which has an intel Celeron book in it...

I hope that helps
how do I install or setup this? boot disk maybe, like it I can get it to stay on?

ok its paused and is staying paused and on so far, now you want me to wait 30 mins?

thanks for this
yeah.. just determining if it is a Windows problem or the hardware in your machine... if it goes on for the 30mins then its Windows.. and your machine is supposedly working.

The BIOS update MAY fix the shutdown problem. Usually updates from the manufacture are set in place to correct faults like what you are experiencing.  Cross your fingers when you apply it.

Also, make sure you run the DOS instructions.

Lastly and most IMPORTANT!!!  The power must not go out and it must complete the update.  If the system faults for some reason while you flash the BIOS.. you may have to toss the motherboard in the trash.  This is rare, but it does happen.
ok no probs, no harm in giving it a go, me not gunna hold you responsible, if it blows up it blow up

thanks and regards
cool.. just take your time and make sure the directions are followed to a T. It's  4:23ami in Hawaii and I'm going to sleep.. I'll check up on this after some rest.
no probs , it is 1.25 am here in Victoria, Austrlia and the computer has been paused since 1.15 ( 10 mins)

is that the longest you've ever seen that go?
yes, for quite a while
and still going
ok.. so if your machine is in a constant on..then attempt the BIOS flash.
Did BIOS flash and all worked ok.. The computer now stays on for longer, but does still shut down... bugger...
Ok.. so go into the BIOS then look for your power management features (turn them off/disable).  What now?
ACPI - S1(POs)
Soft-Off by PWR-BTTN - Instant-Off
PME Event Wake Up - Disabled
ModemRingOn - Disabled
Resume by Alarm - Disabled
Power On By Mouse - Disabled
Pwer On By Keyboard - Disabled
AC BACK Function - Soft Off

These are the setting now also the first time I went into BIOS to check this the machine switched off

Regards....
AC BACK function.. can that be disabled?
optons for AC BACK Function are Soft-Off/Full-On/Memory
ok.. leave it soft off

how about a reinstall of the OS since we've got everything updated.?
I am currently running the diagnostics prog you suggested earlier:

WMATS+ - Failed
Stride 6 - Failed
MATS+ - Failed
LRAND - Failed

After Pass 6 They started off succeeded then they get a Failed, now a mix of Failed and Succeeded but I will give u the final results when done
WOW! me be gone a few hours and it up to pass 180and still going, do I stop it or something? and do I get a report or something like that?
is this ram that is failing?
any other results you got other than what is posted?
nah it just kept on doing pass after pass and the same tests. I have  had the system running since I stopped the diagnostics and it hasn't turned off yet??

not turning off is good. Ok. .stop the process.. and can you reinstall?  Perhaps the last install didn't finish up.
thanyou very much

you have been a great help, I will see how the system goes (all good do far), if no luck I may reinstall, other wise I have just gained a new boat anchor. thanks again

Regards
Thank you.. hope it all works out well... perhaps it can anchor a dingy? :-)
