Exchange 2010 periodically stops receiving Internet mail
I have an exchange 2010 install running on a virtualized windows 2008 R2 64bit install. The host is also windows 2008 Rs 64bit running VMware 2.01
It works in general, but frequently (several times a day) it just stops getting mail from the internet. When this happens, outlook is still connecting and mail between exchange users still functions. Outgoing email also still works. The server still has internet access. Outlook web is still reachable from the internet but doesn't show any new mail. A reboot of the exchange server restores service and mail starts to arrive again. Since the connection between exchange and outlook is never broken, I have no way of knowing that email is down and have to constantly send myself test emails from my gmail account to make sure.
If I am logged into the exchange server and have the management program up, it displays an error that seems to match the timing:
"Processing data from the remote server failed with the following error message: The WinRm client cannot complete the operation within the time specified. Check if the machine name is valid and is reachable over the network and firewall exception for Windows Remote Management service is enabled."
Since the exchange service is on the same machine as the management program, I know that this error is a bit misleading. The fact that the management program stops communicating with the server at the same time the server stops getting email is interesting. The problem is more likely that the exchange service has stopped responding for some reason, not that there is a name resolution issue or a firewall issue. I have the firewall off and I uninstalled Forefront.
I would sure like to know why this keeps happening. Any ideas?
TIA!

The child support payments from EE would be substantial, so get a paternity test.
Is the vm fully allocated its resources or are you over-provisioning anywhere?
What is the spec of the VM?
What about the ESX host - is this overloaded?
