The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

How can I install Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0 without causing another catastrophic network failure?

Asked by anotheropinion in Symantec Anti-Virus Software, Miscellaneous Security, SBS Small Business Server

Tags: , , , ,

Environment: MS Small Business Server 2003 + 8 workstations running XP SP2.  One server acting as domain controller + file server.  All workstations access a shared network application on the server called Compulink "Eyecare".  Standard router configuration and one switch.

I installed Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0 with mostly default settings.  I added the Compulink application to the firewall ignore list. After installation, almost all network traffic failed completely.  I tried adjusting things like the Windows Firewall, simple file-sharing, and every Symantec setting I could find to no avail.  Some PC's could browse network folders, some could not.  Everything was working FINE before this installation, and it caused a complete failure of almost every aspect of our network.  After changing configurations for at least five or six hours, I removed the Symantec product completely, and everything started working fine.

We do not have the luxury of setting up a "test environment", as we have only one server which this Compulink software can be installed on.

Can someone please tell me what I might have missed during setup that would have caused such a massive failure?  Symantec gurus, where are you?Start Free Trial
