We are recieivng alot of spam with usernames that dont exist in our directory-- for example bogus@domain.com, bogus123@domain.com,bogus1
234@domain
.com and so on. They send every name configuration possible. My last posting it was recommended to configure the exchange to have Recipient filtering enabled-- which i am going to do so I dont have to continue cleaning out a thousands of bogus emails that go to our catchall box.
My current setup is below:
Windows 2000 Server DC
Windows 2003 DC with Exchange 2003
Recipient Filtering is not enabled
NDR's (global settings/ Internet message forms/Default) allow NDR reports is checked
Spam filter is GFI Mail Essentials poiting all spam and invalid users to a catchall box
When sending email internally to an invalid email address in the domain an NDR is sent to the sender.
When sending email from an external address to our domain with an invlaid user no NDR is generated and the email goes to the catchall box.
Once I turn on recipient filtering, invalid email address's will no longer be going to the catchall box? So our server will not accept the invalid email address and rejects it, causing the user's server to send the NDR back to the sender, and not an NDR from our postmaster? My biggest worry is that we would be sending out NDR's letting all the spammers know we exist and or we have thousands of NDR's in the Queue box that are waiting to be delivered due to the senders address not existing.
I also want to make sure that all emails coming in go to Exchange first before the spam filter looks at it. Is this true? (Exchange recipient filters bogus users, and then sends the valid users email to the spam filter, which then allows non spam to be directed to the users mailbox)
Lastly, I have read that I need to setup the tar pit feature after enabling the Recipient Filtering.
Any advice or comment would be appreciated.
