The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Trojan SPM/LX

Asked by sstukwila in Networking Security Vulnerabilities

Tags: trojan

This is my first experience in dealing with a user who appears to have a Trojan on his computer and I do not have any expertise in virus/Trojan removal.  The user has received a Windows Internet Explorer alert message which reads; "There is a security vulnerablilty from the Trojan SPM/LX. We recommend you DOWNLOAD one of the security software programs to prevent malware infections."  The infected computer is runing Symantec Antivirus the virus definition file is up to date.

I've Google'd SPM/LX and from the results I selected forum.worldstart.com which addressed a hijacked/infected browser, and forums.techguy.org/security/484536-solved-trojan-spm-lx-help.html which addressed SPM/LX more specifically.  In the information I found at Techguy there is reference to SmitfraudFix.  I've tried to do more research on SmitfraudFix and did see a warning at bleepingcomputer.com which advises;  "I do not recommend using the tool without guidance from a qualified malware removal specialist!"

I then randomly selected www.ewido.net/en/onlinescan/ and www.windowsecurity.com/trojanscan/ to run scans on the user's computer and neither one detected any virus or Trojan.

I'm unable to find any information about the SPM/LX Trojan searching at McAfee, Symantec, etc. and I'm hoping that one of you might be able to validate whether SmitfraudFix would be a good tool to use or if you would suggest that I secure the services of a qualified malware removal specialist or yet, take some other course of action.
