Hi,
I got one 80GB EIDE Maxtor HDD from my friend with some important information on it which he cannot retrieve and use. I tried to copy these files as well using various methods but unfortunately the result was "Access denied" message. Below is some explanation from him about the issue:
"I had Widnows XP (I think it was SP1) installed in my computer, which was an upgrade over previously installed Windows 2000 pro. There was something wrong in the way the operating system ran so I decided to format the hard drive and install fresh system. The files I needed to back up was around 8-10 Gb so I just copied everything to 80GB Maxtor (NTFS formated) physical HD that I had in the machine.
Then I formatted the hard drive which used to have the system. That hard drive had two partitions; one was formatted NTFS in which I used to have the system in, and the other partition was formatted fat32. before I formatted, I combined partitions and installed new XP on it.
After I installed new system, I tried to access my files that I copied to the other HD, but access denied. Apperantly the files are encryped by the user of my previous system. According to what I read from the internet later on I was supposed to backup some recovery agents and/or some certificates to be able to decrypt my files. Because the previous system no longer existed, the user no longer existed. I wasn't able to retrieve the necessary recovery agent, key or certificates. I tried a software called file scavenger and tried to retrieve some certificates from my old operating system, but I couln't get them to work, probable because they may be also corrupt, due to the fact that they are recovered from their encrypted forms".

I can see filenames and folders on this backup drive, but I cannot copy the files. Tried to load file managers under DOS with NTFS support- the same thing: can't open or copy the files. If they are "locked" because previous user on the system decided to encrypt his private data and copied files on backup drive, is there any way to "unlock" them or decrypt them?
Any help will be greatly appriciated.
