There is no backdoor to encrypted data. And if you forget the pass then you risk loosing the data forever, that is true.

First off, all encryption is crackable, it is only a matter of time (for example: 5 billion years). Truecrypt is a good open source encryption software, assuming what you are talking about is file encyrption for storage. If your doing file encryption, you will want to go with symmetrical encryption because of the speed, so your looking at 128 or 256 bit, AES or 3DES.
Use something that is well tested, and I recommend open source which allows everyone to scrutinize the program.
I use an old Encrypted Disk 3 software that was shared on GiveAwayoftheday by Paragon.
It creates image which is pass protected and the data you put there is automatically encrypted. Mount image to drive letter and get additional drive in My Computer. Locate your documents there, modify them. When finished unmount it and be sure that nobody will look into your data.

I doubt, if You do, use the open source projects - everyone can verify.

Any encryption can be break eventually - but those strong ones should overlive You ;)

Pick at Your choice, just pay attention if they implement strong encryption algos (like aes*), if they certified or open source(no back-doors, no flaws in the implementation).
