Hi Breadtan,
thanks for your post but I have lready reformatted my disk.
My research at the problem (before your post) came to the same solution.
With a lot of work I was able to create a running Wintech CD (driver problems) with Bartpe and the "Code of the day" from McAfee.
I'm customer of another product but I was able to retrieve it. ;)
But at the end I wasn't able to acess the data because I couldn't find the "HP recovery key". :(
I wasn't sure I've even created one. After all that afford (and no other ideas) I lost the will to do further investigations. I accepted to lose my data and restore the last backup from month ago.
I someone ever try to recover the MBR. Let it be. I seems to be (nearly) impossible for normal admins.
Even I find the soution before your post, you should get the points.
Thanks.

Before that do make a clone of the HDD and try on the clone instead.

I am thinking that with Win7, the MBR becomes "corrupt" as the Boot Loader portion of the MBR may be affected not the Partition Table itself. The Safeboot module cannot be loaded. Unless we can replicate the boot loader portion to load Safeboot module (somewhere in HDD), it is rather tough to "recover". Seek McAfee advice as well.
Nonetheless, if I am in your shoes, I will rather just recover the data and re-setup the machine (Win7 first then Safeboot). Maybe you can check out this link that removes encryption (better to confirm with McAfee support too before acting)

Also probably, it is best to repair the MBR to the windows os following the link (after (b))
