The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. Any way to encrypt a server without exposing it to cold boot attacks?

Hi experts,

first of all: this is just some kind of research. I am asking this question to ensure I haven't missed some new technology that could make this "dream" come true...

Question: Is it possible to encrypt whole hard drives of servers
-without having to worry about cold boot attacks (as described here: http://citp.princeton.edu/memory/) if thieves somehow manage to steal the device
-without using preboot authentication (which is not very handy on servers...)

Please note that in this theoretical question you should not in any kind worry about physical security. *Let's pretend the high tech thief is already in the room the servers are kept in and knows exactly what he is doing*

In my opinion, there is absolutely no way to eliminate the danger of cold boot attacks because
-unlike notebooks servers are always on and can even be stolen while on (think of redundant power supplies used together with [mobile] USVs)
-using preboot authentication (no matter if bitlocker, truecrypt or encrypted harddrives like seagate FDE) will always require someone to do the input
