The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Problem accessing files on Network Hard Drive over internet using either HTTP or FTP

The problem I am having an issue with is a Freecom FSG-3 Network 500GB HDD which is a multifunction network device, incoporating such features as a HDD, Media Server, Mail Server, Web Server, FTP Server, Print Server etc. The issue I am having is accessing the files I have stored on theis FSG-3 over the internet by either using a web browser or an FTP client. It is significant to mention that I have forwarded the ports 21 + 80 on my router to the FSG's static IP address. Please see below for the specificatiion and my network setup. Also, here is the link to the FSG's own wiki which may give you some information in case you have any queries about this hardware

http://www.openfsg.com/index.php/Main_Page

In relation to the funtionality of my FSG-3, I am able to access it over my LAN via Windows Explorer, HTTP and FTP with no problems. When I try to access it over the internet by eg. entering my Public IP address (in the form xyz.xyz.xyz.xyz:80 into the browser address field) it takes me to modem/router login dialog box 'Home Gateway' and does not appear to forward me to the FSG-3. FTP also does not work over the internet either when I try using either an FTP client or by typing in the ftp address into my browser.

Here is my current configuration:

My LAN is setup as follows:

INTERNET>CONEXANT MODEM/ROUTER>FSG WAN PORT WIRED TO A MODEM/ROUTER LAN PORT

Modem/ Router IP 10.0.0.2
Modem/ Router Subnet Mask 255.0.0.0

I have forwarded ports 21 + 80 on my Conexant router (for both TCP + UDP) to 10.0.0.3

FSG WAN Configuration:

Fixed IP Address 10.0.0.3
Subnet Mask 255.0.0.0
Default Gateway 10.0.0.2
DNS Servers 10.0.0.2

FSG LAN Configuration (should these settings matter as my FSG is wired to my modem/router via the FSG WAN port?):

IP Address 192.168.1.1
IP Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Workgroup MSHOME
Router Name FSG

In addition to the above, I have started all of the necessary services, ie. HTTP, FTP (have not enabled the SSL encryption for this) and CIFS/ SMB file sharing is also running.

I have also started the DHCP server which is setup with the following credentials:

Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway 192.168.1.1
DNS Server 10.0.0.2
IP Address Range 192.168.1.100 - 192.168.1.200
IP Release Time 12hrs

Is there anything wrong with my settings? Or is this a router issue or setting to be resolved? However, do the setting for the LAN + DHCP server actually matter considering the FSG-3 is wired via the WAN port to the modem/router? In addition, I am not attaching any wired devices to the FSG LAN ports.
