Getting snort to work on Windows

I downloaded snort for windows at the URL below and installed it on a laptop just to get familliar with it.  The instructions in the Getting Started section of their manual are not clear to me.  What do I need to do to say do a basic sniff of the interface.  E.g. capture packet headers and output to a text file. If I execute c:/snort/snort.exe...it spews out dozens of switches.  I just want something basic to get oriented.  Thanks.
