Forgot Password! Redhat 9
Hello,
I put linux on a box for fun to hack around on.
I am a linux newb... so forgive me.
It has been a long time since I have logged on, and it seems I forgot my accounts.
All of them.
Could anyone give me some walkthroughs on how to reset my passwords?
Or should I say forget it and re-install...
Thanks.....

Damn - must have hit the mouse button and not noticed. The above should read:
n case the above weren't clear enough ;-)
Insert the RH install CD #1 and boot.
At the "boot:" prompt, type "linux rescue".
The installer will start, and give you a message about searching for Linux installations. When it finds yours, you will be asked if you want to mount the partition read/write - say yes.
When you get the "#" prompt, type "chroot /mnt/sysimage" - this will reset "/" to be the root partition on your disk and give you a root shell. Then, open /etc/shadow in your favorite CLI editor (vi, pico, nedit, whatever) and delete the root password (the entry will look like "root:aWsch65d........:253 97:::::" - delete everything between the first and second ":"). Reboot.
At the GRUB screen, press "e" to edit the default entry (If you set a GRUB password - and you should have done so - first press "p" and enter the password). Arrow to the second line of the boot entry, press "e" again, and add " S" to the end of the line. Press <RET>, then "b" to boot - you will come up into single-user mode, then set a new root password and reboot.
Hope that's a little more clear ;-)
