HOW CAN I SET UP AN INTRUSION DECTECTION SYSTEM ON MY NETWORK

I'm carring out a research project on different Intrusion Detection System.
I've already set you a local area network(LAN), one(1) server(Win 2000 server) and four(4) client(win 2000 Pro.). The server is connected to the internet through ADSL and the other client get on the internet through the server
I want to know how the Intrusion Detection System works, how do i test if it working or not , (by penetrating test, by hacking into the network or which other method).
Hope you can give me some idea on how to go about it and also the types of intrusion detection software i can use to achive the project.
