The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Strange symptoms, possible virus?

Asked by phatzo in Miscellaneous Security

Here's the deal:
The other day i clicked a link in a friends profile bringing me to a page asking me to download something, making a dumb move i accepted the download and saved the file to my desktop, only to find it was what looked like a program file. When i clicked on it it seemed to do nothing. Confused i deleted the file (i don't remember the name of the file but i am pretty sure it was something ".scr"). After thiis point i started having strange isolated symptoms on my computer. First my profile was deleted (not a big deal). Than i come home to my computer to find my away message changed and a website opened in internet explorer asking me to download a file. I can't remember now the name of the file (i know not very helpful) but with a look at the history in my comp i found the address to the site of the unclosable window. I also found out that my away message had been changed and contained a link to another website(unforntunately i don't have that website address again not helpful but if it happens again i will post it). Well the first thing i attempted to do was use ctrl alt del to close the internet explorer window. When the ctrl alt del window opened it immeaditatly closed. I soon realized that i was most likely dealing with a virus that had some process or background program running that would allow me to close it. The first thing i did was to scan my computer with Norton Anti-Virus, which returned no results. Than I scanned my computer with a adware/spyware protecting program called "spybot." Which also changed none of the symptoms. So i decided one of the things i should do is to try and get the ctrl alt del running again. So i tried to open my registry to possible edit the key, but the registry window would flash and than close( NOTE: both ctrl+alt+del and the registry window continue not to open). I assumed this must be another part of the virus. So i searched AIM's webstie to see if i could find any posting of any potential threats or such, but i found none that related to my problem. One of the links mentioned above is listed below but CAUTION is advised becuase i don't understand what it does but it may be helpful to finding the answer to this problem:

The unclosebale window that i saw open in internet explorer when i came home is the following:  http://www.angelfire.com/al4/spin8/staff.html

Other Specifications:
XP Home edition (Version 2002)
Pentium III
256 RAM
The communication program discussed is AIM (AOL Instant Messenger)

Since these isolated symptoms seem to be happening fequently i will will post news of any others, or with further information regarding some of the information left blank above.

Your help will be greatly appreciated
Sincerely,
phatzo
