Question

How to not allow poeple to save to local machine?

Asked by: halfelite

Im trying to find a way for user not to be able to save files to there local machine but only to the NAS system. I have looked into things like deep freeze but i need the ability to still let them have emails. I really just need it so they cant create folders on there desktop/my documents/c:/ and cant save personal/work files anywhere on the local machine. Cost is not an issue. Just need something efficent.

   Thanks

group policy would be the best way to achieve this. I suggest looking into that.

I agree with Group Policy.
From the Run command type GPEDIT.MSC
Open the Administrative template under User Configuration.
Double the first folder and begin searching for the policies you wish to implement.
Each sub folder or Group Policy setting has a tab located on the lower left desription window. Select the "Extended" tab for explanations as to what each policy does.
You can do a myriad of things with GP. Such as, locking down IE so that programs cannot be saved via the Internet. You can prevent the users from installing any software by floppy, cd-rom, etc. You can lock down the desktop, toolbars, etc.
Basically, if you put the thumb screws to them like I do they are left with the equivalent of an Etch-O-Sketch. Have fun!!!

I use Group police to redirect My Documents to my network drive.  The users think they are saving locally, but it's all to the location of my choosing.

hey
its easy to do. it can make ur drive  cant be opened

 open the  registry editor
<run
regedit

HKEY_LOCALMACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer -

create a new DWORD value by right-clicking Explorer, then choosing New DWORD value. Name the value "NoviewonDrive" (without the quotes). This will make ur drives nt open
the can make anew folder but the cant open in it and can  but any thing

Following the table below, enter the decimal number corresponding to the drive(s) you want to hide as NoDrives value data. When you right-click on NoDrives and choose Modify, make sure you select Decimal base, not Hexadecimal.

Drive Number to hide
A: 1
B: 2
C: 4
D: 8
E: 16
F: 32
G: 64
H: 128
I: 256
J: 512
K: 1024
L: 2048
M: 4096
N: 8192
O: 16384

S: 262144
T: 524288
U: 1048576
V: 2097152
W: 4194304
X: 8388608
Y: 16777216
Z: 33554432
All drives 67108863

If you want to hide more than one drive, you simply add the drive amounts together for a combined total.

For example, to hide the D:/ and T:/ drives, add the decimal value for the D:/ drive to the decimal value to the T:/ drive.

8 (D) + 524288 (T) = 524296
To disable all of your visible drives, set the value to 67108863
Note : if u u must Either  close  explorer ( taskmanger) close explorer and reopen it ( run -explorer) or restart the machine
 again

nOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOTE
WHEN U MODIFES THE VALUE  REMBER THERE ARE TWO OPITION
 (decimal-hexadeicmal)
u  but the  value to decimal
not hexadecimal
ok
to hide the C and D:  adnd E:   value of decimal must be 4+8+16=28
to hide the C: and D: and  E: and F: value of the decimal must be 4+8+16+32=60
other example
cut and paste this in  txt file and rename it with extention *.reg
from here-----------------

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]

"noviewondrive"=dword:0000001c

till here ---------------

------- here  dowrd value is hexadecimal   1c= 28  in decimal which u ll write

it will  nt allow  the enter of drive C: and D: and E:
any othe rthing u wanat im in ur service
if u have 4 drive C: D: E: F:
the value in decimal ith be  4+8+16+32 =60_________ hexdecimal will be 3c
if u have 5 drives C: D: E: F: G:
the value in decimal will be  4+8+16+32+64=124_______ hexadecimal will be 7c
if u have 6 drive C: D: E: F: G: H:
the value will be 4+8+16+32+64+128 =252   in decimal _____________fc in hexadecimal
and so onn
 for all drives wh\ahtever u have  C:.............................Z:
