Question

Which SYGATE Firewall access requests to approve?

Asked by: rene_carballo

Hello.

How can I tell which SYGATE access requests to approve?

Often, the only source identifier is an IP address.  One used to be able to get the corresponding DSN and registrant on WHOIS.COM, but I don't think this works any more.  Looks like they just register domain names now.

Symantec was (at least) easier because it rated the risk.  It's easy to accept a LOW RISK request and block a HIGH RISK request.

It depends entirely on what you are using the computer for.
If you are a client (e.g. a normal user) on the internet, you'll only want to accept requests which you have instigated (e.g. If you have just requested a webpage from a website, it is only reasonable for it to send a reply to you :D)
If you are a server, you will need to let other PCs connect to the server...

However, in the normal course of things, running a single computer on the internet, no network, and no services running (e.g. FTP server, web server, SMTP server, etc. If you don't know what these are, you likely aren't running one :D), you will want to deny all access requests (apart from to things you initiated).

If you run ANY kind of server, even a Counter-Strike server, or a game of Age Of Empires, you must allow all connections to the port it is running on (depends completely on the application as to what port it uses. BTW, a port is like a hole for other PCs to send data to your PC, there are 65k of them)

Sygate is a high security firewall, i think you should keep it, anyway :D.

Understood. Thank you bloodrazor.

I think I'm going to finally have to make time to actaully read the sygate documentation.  It's not enough to just install and forget it.

HOW CAN I TRACE IP ADDRESSES?  Any suggestions?  This would be helpful.

I don't want to block everything, because some of my legitimate applications get updated automatically.  I get requests from HP, sa.microsoft.com, sonic.com, and Symandtec LiveUpdate (although I'd like to get rid of all Symantec traces if I could).

Don't now remember what I bought from sonic.com, maybe an ATI video driver.  Not sure why they're still accessing me, unless they're automatically updating whatever it is I bought there

What's  \drivers\system 32\ndisuio.sys?  Any ideas?  Somebody's all over this.  Also \svchost.exe.

Download Ostronet tools --
http://www.ostrosoft.com/ostronet.asp

1/ resolves host names to IP addresses and vice versa (Host Resolver - dns)
2/ shows network-related information (IP address, host name, version of Winsock, etc.)
3/ returns contact information (address, phone, fax, administrator name, DNS servers) for specified network (Network Info)

<<
*ndisuio.sys is a process belonging to the NDIS User Mode I/O (NDISUIO) NDIS protocol driver which offers support for wireless devices such as Bluetooth and the like. This program is important for the stable and secure running of your computer and should not be terminated.

*svchost.exe is a system process belonging to the Microsoft Windows Operating System which handles processes executed from DLLs. This program is important for the stable and secure running of your computer and should not be terminated.

Note: svchost.exe is a process which is registered as the W32.Welchia.Worm. It takes advantage of the Windows LSASS vulnerability, which creates a buffer overflow and instigates your computer to shut down. To see more information about this vulnerability please look at the following Microsoft bulletin: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms04-011.mspx

<<How can I tell which SYGATE access requests to approve?
<<
If you know you just launched a program, app, or the like -- *yes you want to access it.
When you are sure that it is safe & will be accessed often, then check it permanet.

My default approach is to say No & if i still get access then the next time make it permanet.
If you are unsure or in doubt alsways say no -- if the app does not proceed as expected, then start again select Yes & make premanent.

Hope this makes sense :)
