Question

need help removing spyaxe

Asked by: nimrodon

hi,
my computer is infected with spyaxe. I've tried using some removal instructions on the net (from this site too), and I Can't seen to get rid of it. ad-aware and ewido don't recognize it.
the symptoms on the computer is the : "your computer is infected!" supposed security window.
I may have deleted some files too that may be critical for my OS, though I can't see anything wrong in the OS.

here's the hijackthis log:

Greetings, nimrodon !

In order to clean your PC from infections related to Spyware Axe product, please follow the instructions below:

1) Save Uninstallers.zip from http://www.spyaxe.com/uninstall/uninstallers.zip to your desktop or HDD.

2) Extract 2 files "illegal_adv_uninstall1.exe" and "illegal_adv_uninstall2.exe" to your desktop or your HDD using WinZip.

3) Execute both of them one by one by double-clicking with your mouse.
*note: they will run instantly in the background. So don't be concerned when you don't visually see anything happening.

4) Reboot your PC

5) Your PC is now clean from the infections.

If you haven't done so already, delete the entire spyaxe directory from your drive under program files.

Best wishes!

hi guys,
thanks for your help. combining the two answers helped me to remove the spyaxe totally.
I hope it never comes back. now I need to protect my self.  what's the best free anti-spyware tool available?

thanks,
Nimrod.

by: war1Posted on 2005-11-19 at 16:10:04ID: 15327603

nimrodon, I posted both answers. :-)  Glad you got rid of spyaxe.

If you use Windows XP, best free anti-spyware tool available is Microsoft Antispyware

http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

It is a little instrusive, but has both good active protection and manual scan.

But no one antispyware gets rid of all spyware.  So you should use a couple of different ones.  Adaware and Spybot Search and Destroy are good antispyware programs that get rid of traditional spyware.

I know you asked for free ones, but the best active protection antispyware is Spy Sweeper.  It has the highest rating in detecting 80% of spyware.  The best one to get rid of difficult to remove spyware is Ewido.  Both are shareware.
