Installing norton antivirus on top of my existing one.

Hi, I have a question about installing another AV on top of another one. My new computer came with a 60 day subscription to norton internet security 2005 and it expired awhile ago. The University that I'm attending gives students free norton antivirus for their computers. My question is, how do I install that antivirus part into my already-exist norton internet security that already has an expired norton antivirus included in it? Thanks in advance and please don't get too technical.

Greetings, myplace !

You should uninstall the old Norton antivrus (NAV) before installing the new one, or they will conflict. Is Norton Internet Security (NIS) expired, or only the Norton antivirus subscription?  If the latter, then go to Add/Remove Programs, highlight NIS and start the NIS uninstall. Select custom uninstall.  Uninstall Nortton Antivirus, not the rest of NIS.

Reboot. Then install the new NAV.

Hi, myplace

From you Question it is obvious that Norton Internet Security (NIS) 2005 is being expired. So, Please go to the control panel and then Add/Remove programs and select NIS 2005 and uninstall it. Find out "Norton Live Update" and uninstall that too after uninstalling NIS 2005, after this check in the list if you have "Norton LiveReg", uninstall that too. Now you are ready to install Norton Antivirus (NAV) without any conflict.

war1 is absolutely correct.  Blow the current Norton away, make sure to reboot so that the system can clear itself out properly, the install the new one.  Make sure to reboot.  

Not sure if it happens in all cases, but I had to do this before.  Didn't restart, and it did end up causing problems.  had to uninstall, reboot, and install again.

I just tried what war1 has suggested.  There is no option that lets me uninstall only the NAV.  I can only choose to uninstall parental control and one other thing.

myplace, I was thinking of another program, Office, where differnet parts can be restore.  You need to uninstall NIS completely.  Then install NAV.

For a firewall, you can use Windows Firewall, or a free firewall like ZoneAlarm.

No, I do not it is worth $30 to renew subscription.  AVG, AVAST, and Antivir antivirus programs are free.  And your Norton AV is free for a year.

I'm in total agreement with war1.  Here are my substitutes for the components of NIS

Norton Anti-Virus - AVG Anti-Virus (like war1 said) or Kaspersky (but can't remember if its free)
Norton Personal Firewall - Windows SP2 Firewall (like war1 said) or ZoneAlarm is great too if you don't want to use MS's firewall
Norton Anti-Spam - Still searching for this one, but I use Thunderbird which does exceptional junk mail filter after you train it for a couple of months
Norton Parental Control - There are plenty of these out there, but I'm guessing you could care less about this component.

Other software that is free and helps protect your computer (but you have to run them manually, their not resident)
Adaware (from download.com)
spybot (from download.com)
MS Anti-Spyware (from microsoft.com)
Rootkit Revealer (from sysinternals.com)

I think what war1 and I are trying to get at is that anything you want to help protect your computer is offered for free somewhere.  You may just have to look for awhile.

One final note to is look at the virus response times at this link.  Norton/Symantec is consistenly one of the slowest.
