Question

Help with a as/virus called "adware.coolsavings"

Asked by: bfeldman13

I have been trying all night to fix this adware/virus that my computer has. I cannot figure out how to get rid of it. NIS2005 is all screwed up and worthless with this installed. I cannot find any good info on how to uninstall or get rid of this. I have tried to delete some registry keys that a couple sites said to delete, but still have this internet ad problem and all sorts of NIS alerts popping up.

It's beyond any reasonable way of recovering...  Do you have another computer?

by: jvuzPosted on 2006-01-09 at 06:40:45ID: 15649854

first do a check with stinger:

http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/

by: jvuzPosted on 2006-01-09 at 06:41:32ID: 15649863

then download HijackThis v1.99.1 from here, run it and Save the LOG file:
http://tools.radiosplace.com/HijackThis.exe

Then Post that log at this site >> http://www.hijackthis.de/index.php?langselect=english
and it will automatically analyse it for u,,, Fix the entries which it labels as Nasty :)
To Fix, check the lines and click on Fix Checked !!

HJT Log Tutoriol >> http://aumha.org/a/hjttutor.php

CAUTION: Before fixing the entries in hijackthis, make sure that they are really Nasty and can be deleted, better u first research for it on Google and then when u will confirm that they shud be deleted, Fix them. And whenever u run Hijackthis, run it from a New folder on ur desktop, so that in case of any problem, u can take advantages of its created backups of fixed items. And in case if u still face problems in dealing with it, just analyse ur log at the above site, and then scroll down where u will see a Save Analyse button, hit it and it will save ur Log Analysation, then copy the link of that page and paste it here, and we will check it for u :)

!! GOOD LUCK !!

I have another computer, should I just save as much as I can (pictures, docs) and then reformat the whole thing?

by: jvuzPosted on 2006-01-09 at 06:42:01ID: 15649869

Also do a check with ewido:

http://www.ewido.net/en/

by: bfeldman13Posted on 2006-01-09 at 06:44:00ID: 15649898

I have alredy tried to run hijack and fixed the problems, but they just come right back.

by: bfeldman13Posted on 2006-01-09 at 06:45:10ID: 15649913

I also did the check with ewido and found 15 problems, but you have to purchase this program to fix them. I copied the page of what the details were and followed all the steps in deleting the problematic reg keys, but still the same problem when finished.

Follow these instructions to remove it from your computer:

   1. Open the Downloaded Program Files folder from Windows directory, search the file cpnmgr.dll. If it exists, then do the following.
   2. Click Start > Run, type the following command and press Enter:

      regsvr32 /u %Windows%\downloaded program files\cpnmgr.dll

Note: You should replace the %Windows% variable by the Windows directory in your systems(by deafult it is c:\windows).
   3. Reboot the computer.
   4. Delete the file cpnmgr.dll using Windows Explorer.
   5. Open registry editor(Click Start > Run, type 'regedit'), delete the following registry entries to clean up:

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\moduleusage\c:/windows/downloaded program files/cpnmgr.dll

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\shareddlls\c:\windows\downloaded program files\cpnmgr.dll

Backup all the files you need on your infected machine.  Update your other computer with your latest virus definitions AND FULLY SCAN the computer.   If possible, physically transport your hardrive to your clean machine.  Scan  ONLY that drive that is infected.  DO NOT QUARANTINE the files, DELETE.  Return drive to original machine and reboot.  One of 2 things will happen.  1 the machine works.. no future occurence.  2 the machine wont work properly.  in this case, you re-install the OS.

This would be the fastest way to fix the problem.

Hey, this is still open.. what's the status?  Any new development?  I would like to table this or help you out.  If there is a valid answer could you please grade accordingly.  If there were many input from other's splitting the points would be good as we invested our time in helping you out.  Please advise.

Please some comment?

bfeldman13, why the C grade?  See the Grading Guidelines:
http://www.experts-exchange.com/help.jsp#hi73

Grading at Experts Exchange is NOT like school. Here's what EE says: Although we use an A-D scale here at Experts Exchange, it works differently than, say, school grades. If one or more Experts' proposals are accepted as answers, they should usually be given an A or B grade, since they have taken the time to provide you with a working solution. If a possible solution is incomplete - ask for clarification or details before accepting the answer and grading it. People should not be given lower grades because of incorrect grammar or because you just accepted their answer or comment to close the question. Keep in mind, your question and any follow-up comments should be focused so that there can be a specific answer. The following is a good guideline to follow when grading:

        * A: The Expert(s) either provided you with a thorough answer or they provided you with a link to information that thoroughly answered your question. An "A" can also be given to any answer that you found informative or enlightening beyond the direct question that you asked.
        * B: The Expert(s) provided an acceptable solution, or a link to an acceptable solution, that you were able to use, although you may have needed a bit more information to complete the task.
        * C: Because Experts' reliability are often judged by their grading records, many Experts would like the opportunity to clarify if you have questions about their solutions. If you have given the Expert(s) ample time to respond to your clarification posts and you have responded to each of their posts providing requested information; or if the answers, after clarification, lack finality or do not completely address the issue presented, then a "C" grade is an option. You also have the option here of just asking Community Support to delete the question.

I think the "C" was for an accepted solution, but not the answer bfeldman wanted to hear.  Like having the Diabetes cause gangreen on your foot, but the only way to fix that is to cut it off.

Thank you for the points..

by: jvuzPosted on 2006-01-14 at 03:08:15ID: 15699580

But what was the 'solution' for him/her: backing up the disk and reinstalling or removing coolsavings?

by: war1Posted on 2006-01-14 at 08:00:26ID: 15700470

I think jvuz should gets some points, as my comment is a repeat of his earlier comment.

Thanx war1, but it's not about that, it's just what helped him (or what didn't).
