Question

How do I get rid of "

Asked by: earlhop

I keep getting a "Security Alert" box which ask me yes or no or view certificate before I can continue on to what ever site I am going to.  It is very annoying and I don't want it to keep appearing.  I have tired to find it to eliminate the box, but can not find where it is to get rid of it.  Can anyone tell me what it is and how to get rid of it.  I have run ad-aware, no-adware, and spybot to try to find it, keeps appearing and bothering me.  Please, some help...

Greetings, earlhop !

In Internet Explorer, go Tools > Options > Advanced. Scroll down to Security area. Uncheck "Check for publisher certificate" and "Check for server certificate revocation".  Click OK. Restart the computer.

Best wishes!

Agree that most of them are bad news, likely malware trying to spy. The visibility of the certificate choice is a good idea. You do not really want to download software that is untraceable, and that messagebox at least lets you know that you can find the author of the SW downloaded if you have a complaint.

One way to get rid of them is to upgrage your system. This is among reasons that Flash is so popular. D/L Flash, no more message.

However, the messages appear prior to my thinking that I really want to DL. So my answer is different. Websites that have it that way, where you must view those extra screens without request, are not to be onsidered good or reliable. Avoid them like the plague. One way to identify the bad sites, or those poorly designed, is getting the extra unsolicited windows. There are other websites you can use that won't do that. You don't really want to continue on to other areas of such sites, it is likely to become much worse for you.

Answer: Boycott websites that do that. If you can't remember them, filter their IP.

I appreciate answers from both war1 and SunBow.  I did what both of you said.  I downloaded the new flash programs, and updated with Microsoft.  In addition I went to Options/Advanced and did that thing too.  I no longer get the Security Alert box.  Thanks for your help.  If the moderator will do it, I will accept giving you each another 125 points to make it 250 for each of you...
Again, Thanks...

Next time, before closing, use your own will to modify points upward. (you can also 'a'ppreciate with an 'A' grade). You may not decrease. A moderator can 'probably' reopen it for you. A PE may also be able to change it around, I dunno. war1 probably does, or ask about it in CS.

Question back at you about :
> "Check for server certificate revocation".

What did you find there? I used to find it defaulted to unchecked, which never made much sense to me.

>  and updated with Microsoft

There once was a time Verisign gave out the name "Microsoft" to some boob. That is the kind of thing the can be revoked, and if so, is certainly something I'd want to know before proceding to DL. But for MS, it is easier, I find, to just stick to their website for DL of their tools. Aside from Macromedia, I cannot think of anything Verisign signs off on that is either desireable or not dangerous. That doesn't mean I recommend Flash, although I probably should. I mainly do not like the popups when unrequested and needless.

It did default back to "Check for server certificate revocation".
As for Updated with Microsoft.  I went to the update page and there  were two items under security that I needed to install.  If either of these had any thing to do with the problem, I don't know.  I just am happy I don't have the box showing up anymore.
Thanks again for your help.

They are probably relevant, but more along the lines of more choices like that being made for you. Less the protection, than the default choices, all around. You'd need time at their website and maybe a couple others to sort it all out. Perhaps not said enough, make sure you do get the monthly security patches for whatever products you use. When they issue the patches, the vulnerabilities and exploit possibilities become more well known (and abused). At least there's nothing above indicated you've been among the 'victims'.
