Question

NTFS Permissions

Asked by: shankshank

We had about 50 folders that we needed to set individual permissions on. We had them in one folder, and now we need to move them into another folder on the server. The problem is, when we move it, the permissions all reset to what the new folder is. How do we fix this since we already modified the permissions for the 50 folders

backup and restore it using  different location option

or

Both explain in detail how to do what you're asking, one on folders in general using cacls, the other specifically on the user home folders.

wouldn't the MOVE operation move the files WITH ACLs and
COPY operation result in files being copied but ACLs being inherited from the new location.

if you're afraid to try the move operation on all of them (which is, of course, only normal and verification of a success is often in order before actual operations), make a sample file, verify it's ACL with console app like cacls, move the file, verify it's new ACL and take notice of the inherited or moved ACL.
there.

yep, exactly like I said: _move_ the directories and they would move with ACLs.
here's a little test you can conduct on your windows (server) command prompt on ntfs:

echo "test" > test.txt
cacls test.txt /G YourUserName:F
mkdir testdir
cacls test.txt
cacls testdir
copu test.txt testdir
cd testdir
cacls test.txt
del test.txt
cd ..
move test.txt testdir
cd testdir
cacls test.txt

It sounds like you are moving the folders into a folder that has the Inherit from parent check box checked. Clear the top level folder Inherit box before doing the move.

Set the new folder security settings 1st.  Go into the Security Tab on the properties on the folder, click the advanced button and UnCheck inherit Security Settings.  That should be all you have to do, know the new folder upon moving should keep its securioty settings, if it is not set to inherit.
