Popup says Warning! Your PC is at risk of virus and malware attack

I occasionally get a popup with a window title "The page at http://piscanner2.info says:"
and the body of the message says "Warning! Your PC is at risk of virus and malware attack.

Your system requires immediate check!
System Security will perform a quick and free scan of your PC for viruses and malicious programs."

Does anyone know if this is malware and how I remove it? When this occurs, which is occasionally, I poweroff my system and reboot, because I do not want to click the OK button or the X exit in case it is boobytrapped. Am I being paranoid?

A: Yes it is malware.

It's called cptmon.exe or tcpipmon.exe or something similar and the file is located in the system32\ folder

This is happening frequently this evening, so it's quite annoying. I remove the popup by going into the Task Manager and deleting it - this saves me having to reboot the machine. In the task manager, the task is called VirusDoctor - Online Protection - Mozilla Firefox.

Clicking the OK button usually puts you on the webpage of the scammer's "anti-virus" software. So it's not a real problem clicking it, but you should remove it in safe mode by finding the correct .exe file in system32. cptmon.exe or tcpipmon.exe are the files suggested by that website. You should look if you have either of those files.

I do not see either of these files or anything similar in the system32 folder. Have you personally had this popup on your computer? I'm reluctant to follow the instructions in the above link because they include downloading a program to clean malware, and how do I know it is legit?

Thanks for any additional ideas.

I would think that clicking OK could be an invitation to something sinister being downloaded to one's computer, so would be reluctant to do so. Going to a bad guy's website seems risky to me, as well.

Try Malwarebytes from download.com...It is a safe app to use...

1) Download and run CCleaner to clean all temp/junk files in your system which may relate to the virus

(http://www.ccleaner.com/download)

2) Download & run Hijackthis (attach the log file here)

http://go.trendmicro.com/free-tools/hijackthis/HijackThis.exe

3) Download & run GMER (rootkit scanner) from (http://www2.gmer.net/gmer.zip)

Start GMER, select all options on the right side, after scanning is finished, click on save. Attach the log file here

4) Download & run Combofix (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)

fyi - GMER does not run in safe mode. I really should just restore my system to an earlier point, but think it's worth the exercise to do the above suggestions.

I downloaded Kaspersky but it says I have to uninstall existing antivirus software, which i don't want to do. So I'm going to skip that step.

When I downloaded the live cd, it said I had to uninstall. I'll give it a try without uninstalling anything - thanks! (scanning with malwarebytes right now, the quick scan found nothing) - also, Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool found nothing in its quick scan, I'll run a full scan later, when the current malwarebytes complete scan finishes.

The live cd is an iso image which you have to burn to a cd.
This creates a bootable rescue cd which you boot your machine to.
Once booted to the rescue cd you can update its definations and run its scanner "outside" of the operating system that you are running.
