Question

Injection attack??

Asked by: RustyRazor

Hi All:

My site gets attacked every 3 days or so.  The attack takes the form of a line appended to each .asp, .htm, and .js file, which more or less reads as:

<script src=xxx.php></script>

where xxx is a call to some other domain.  I've made sure the all public form input is sanitized, especially SQL queries.  There doesn't appear to be any untoward activity in my site-programmed logs.  My web host doesn't seem to have a clue.  From what I've read about javascript and SQL injections, including what's in this site, I'm not convinced that this is an injection attack.  I believe my host is running a Mircosoft server with IIS, but I can provide other details based upon your responses.

This is pretty annoying to say the least and I'm hoping some of the sages subscribed here can point me in the right direction.

Which FTP client you are using to upload the files to the server.

Do the commands typically come in respetitive pattern?  More than likely, it is a malicious person or persons running a vulnerability scanner or other type of website attack tool against your site to see if any security holes are reported that they can exploit.

If you want to paste some examples from your logs, we could be able to  tell more.

Hope this helps...

Mike

You may also have been infected by some kind of program that executes every three days or so to update your files...

Uploads with WS_FTP by Ipswich.

Pasting examples won't be helpful because there's nothing of interest.  Basically, program name, when run, who ran it, their IP, etc.  When the attack occurs, all of the files on the server have the same date and time within a minute of each other.  There happens to never be log activity during those times.

How can I find out the method of attack and program against it, or should is this a security deficiency on the part of my web host?

If its effecting every page and is hard-coded into the page then it's not sql injection - sql injection is for databases and does not hard-code into the page.

Sounds like someone has most likely hacked into the server and is running some sort of program if all the files are being changed in just a couple of minutes.   Problem is they could have left something running on the web server so it will trigger every 3 days...

The SCRIPT code though should be a major concern - could be they are looking to hijack your visitors sessions - if you are collecting personal or important information from your visitors this is a major problem.

Get you ISP to change your passwords (FTP and any others).  Also make sure they are run an anti-virus scan on the server.   This does however sound like an issue for your ISP as someone has or is gaining unauthorised access to your server.

My site does not gather any personal information from visitors.  However, I do keep company data on the system with a series of form-input-sanitized, password-protected back-end ASP programs.  This seems like a random attack designed to possibly gain control of users' browsers.  I'm actually kind of surprised that there's not more info available through this group, as I've seen this happen on the other 2 web host servers I've done business with.   It has to be common.

I do have a flash video that plays on a couple of pages.  Could it be something through there?

This is a common virus now a days and it spreads due to the FTP Client, Just do two things first clear all the files on your system, then upload the files and after uploading the files please change the password of your web hosting account.
Secondly if you use a good hosting provider then also this will not happen.

Mayank

...it spreads due to the FTP Client...

What do you mean by that?

by: mayankagarwalPosted on 2009-11-07 at 21:10:21ID: 25769463

In my case this has happened.
With cute ftp and ws_ftp.
But then i switched to godaddy and used godaddy ftp then it stopd.

by: RustyRazorPosted on 2009-11-08 at 07:21:26ID: 25770710

OK, but what is the vulnerability with WS_FTP?  If you're using it simply to upload files, how does the attack occur?

by: RustyRazorPosted on 2009-11-08 at 07:28:43ID: 25770735

Is there any info out there documenting security problems with WS_FTP?

by: mayankagarwalPosted on 2009-11-08 at 07:30:29ID: 25770739

As of now I dont have any document but you can try the previous solution.
Cleaning all the files then upload them and then change the ftp password.

OK, I took your advice.  Now we wait and see.  I'd say if it goes a week without an attack, you get the points.

by: RustyRazorPosted on 2009-11-19 at 13:07:56ID: 25864951

OK, it's been over a week and the attack hasn't returned.  The points go to you!
