Question

SSH without password same host

Asked by: sudhi

Hi All,

I'm trying to configure ssh to log in without any password on the same box. Assuming the box name is : test123 and the OS user is : oracle, the following line should work without prompting for the password:

$ ssh test123 date

But everytime I do that, it still prompts me for password. The steps that I've followed are :

1. Generate the keys using ssh-keygen. I've used an empty passphrase.
[oracle@test123 oracle]$ ssh-keygen -t dsa

2. Copy the contents of id_dsa.pub to authorized_keys
[oracle@test123 .ssh]$ cat id_dsa.pub > authorized_keys

3. Try the ssh <hostname> <command> :
[oracle@test123 .ssh]$ ssh test123 date
oracle@test123's password:
Mon Mar 15 20:03:39 IST 2004

4. Here is the verbose output of it :

[oracle@test123 .ssh]$ ssh -v test123 date

Sudhi,
The usual problem with this is incorrect permissions on the ~.ssh directory.  It needs to be 775.
Id you run the sshd server in debug mode you may get a error message to this effect (stop sshd, re-run it with sshd -d -d)

by: sudhiPosted on 2004-03-15 at 07:53:06ID: 10598093

liddler,

the .ssh folder already has the permissions set to 775.

how would I start the sshd with the debug option. I just the following command as root to start/stop it:

service sshd stop
service sshd start

Thanks,
Sudhi.

Permission should be 755 NOT 775 - Sorry my typo!!

you need to run it from command line
firstly find out the path to sshd, type:
which sshd (if it can't find it try find / -name sshd )
it should say something like
/sbin/sshd
or
/usr/local/sbin/sshd
then run
/usr/local/sbin/sshd -d -d

Well, your typo was actually the permissions on the directory.
I've modified the permission on the dire ~oracle/.ssh to 755
I tried running the sshd with the debug option from one window and from the other window, I did the command again and here is the output from the debug window:

debug1: Starting up PAM with username "oracle"
debug1: PAM setting rhost to "XXXXXXXX"
debug2: monitor_read: 41 used once, disabling now

debug1: kbdint_alloc: devices ''
debug2: auth2_challenge_start: devices
Failed keyboard-interactive for oracle from 152.69.168.69 port 47768 ssh2

As per the above, it says bad ownership or modes for the authorized_keys file. The current permissions for the files uder the ~/.ssh is :

-rw-r--r--    1 oracle   oracle        620 Mar 15 21:55 id_dsa.pub
-rw-------    1 oracle   oracle        668 Mar 15 21:55 id_dsa
-rw-rw-r--    1 oracle   oracle        620 Mar 15 21:56 authorized_keys
-rw-r--r--    1 oracle   oracle        232 Mar 15 21:56 known_hosts

Anything else that I need to do here ?

>> Authentication refused: bad ownership or modes for file /home/oracle/.ssh/authorized_keys
file authorized_keys has wrong permission change it to 755 as well

Thanks a Ton !!!

Finally I've got it working. So the problem was with the permission settings on the directory and on the authorized_keys file.
and its a nice to start the sshd with the debugging option.

Thanks liddler.

Regards,
Sudhi.

Excellent,
Always glad to help...
This is one of the commonest problems with sshd, and until you learn the sshd -d trick, very hard to track down.  It often catches you out, particularly if you use a non-standard umask.
Having a little script like:

#!/bin/bash
chmod -R 755 /home/*/.ssh

in your toolkit might be handy if you are installing / using / debugging sshd

Hi,

I am facing a similar problem when trying for PasswordLess SSH login. During debugging, i found the error like invalid permissions and modes for authorized_keys and same for authorized_keys2. I have carefully followed the setup details for PasswordLess SSH Access (RSA PublicKey Based Authentication). Also set the permissions for $HOME/.ssh/authorized_keys to 777 for tryout. Still getting the same error. Is it something i need to look beside my proposed
