The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Howto regain root access (lost password) on floppyless thinclient?

Asked by fax in Linux Network Security

Tags: , ,

Hi everybody!

I recently bought a 3rd or 4th hand Neoware Eon Preferred 2000e Thinclient on the internet. One of the previous owners set a root password that nobody remembers. This means that I can boot the linux that resides on a disk-on-chip and use the terminal functions, but I cannot even adjust the screen resolution. I would like to try to find the root password by swiping the password and shadow files, and do a brute force on another (fast) machine. [The thinclient itsself has a national geode 300 mhz processor roughly equivalent of a pentium 166 mmx or so, so I have to get the files off of the machine, to have a chance to find the pw in my lifetime :-)]
A lot of tutorials on the internet tell me to boot from a floppy and copy the password and shadow files from the harddisk. Well I run into two problems: First I have no floppydrive, only an IDE connection. Secondly I have no "original" harddisk, since the OS resides on a chip.
The second problem I might be able to handle, once I get a working OS I can mount the chip using drivers I found on the internet.
So that leaves me with the first problem: How do I get a working OS on a hard disk that I then connect to the IDE port of the thinclient to boot from?
Can I use rawrite to write bootfloppy images to a harddisk? Does anyone have any ideas?
And after that, will I be able to copy the password / shadow files to the HD, mount it in another machine, and do brute force?Start Free Trial
