The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Setting up a Linux Firewall, file server, and dhcp server

Asked by mattmc97 in Linux Network Security

Tags: , , ,

Hello all.

I have a windows 2000 server that acts as a DHCP server, file server, DNS server, VPN server, and runs exchange for email. Well, it got the worm this weekend and had our web access and email down for two days while we got everything all cleaned off it.

What I would like to do is to build a redundant machine using linux so if I were to get a virus again, I could just switch to the linux machine and have everyone back up in a few minutes.

I had already implemented Postfix as an email filter which passes the filtered email to exchange for delivery, so I can modify that to do local delivery.

My questions are as follows:

1. Is there a good linux firewall that I could put in place permanently that would help keep hackers and virus out to begin with or would you recommend a router with a firewall built in as a better alternative connected behind my cisco (we currently have a cisco 2611 router)?

2. Would this firewall verify my VPN connections for me or would I have to allow passthrough to my win2000 server?

3. Finally, if I wanted to setup this machine or another machine as a backup windows file server using Samba, is there a way to block access to the outside world (not counting unplugging the network cable!) except for daily/weekly backups of my win2000 server and then if the win2000 server goes down I could make it available to the network?

Program names and URLs to any guides would be greatly appreciated!

thanks.
