The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Access Control For Linux Shares

Tags: Linux, Fedora, 8
How do you apply file and or share permissions to a linux share against a windows active directory security group.

We just deployed a Fedora 8 box at work with several shares and I would like to restrict access to windows active directory security groups. In addition to share level permissions, I need to enforce windows ntfs equivalent permissions to files within the linux shares.

You will have to join the Samba server to the domain to achieve this.

You're going to have to do 2 things:
 1) Join the server to the ADS domain, and
 2) Configure Samba to use the ADS credentials

Step 1: Joining the domain (ADS or NT Domain)
In the example below, you SHOULD be able to figure out the parts you'll need to change... but at a minimum:
MYDOMAIN=your ADS domain name
adroot=some ADS Domain Admin username
adrootpw=the above account's password
# net ads join -Uadroot%adrootpw

NOTE: the % between the username / password is required (no spaces! the % instead of a space!)

You should get a message back saying
Joined SERVERNAME to realm MYDOMAIN

If not, consult the help files at: http://us4.samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-HOWTO-Collection/domain-member.html

Step 2: Making Samba actually USE the ADS server
You'll need to insert (or change) the following entries in your smb.conf file (usually found in /etc/samba/smb.conf):
security = ads
realm = MYDOMAIN
workgroup = MYDOMAIN
encrypt passwords = yes
password server = YOUR.ADS.SERVER.NAME

Now, before you actually restart your Samba server, you may (will) ALSO have to modify your Kerberos settings (ADS is a "kind of" Kerberos authentication/encryption). Edit the file /etc/krb5.conf:

[libdefaults]
      default_realm = MYDOMAIN

[realms]
      MYDOMAIN = {
      kdc = YOUR.ADS.SERVER.NAME
      }

[domain_realms]
      .kerberos.server = YOUR.ADS.SERVER.NAME

You'll want to TEST this (after joining the ADS) with the command:
# kinit adroot%adrootpw

Good Luck!!!

I hope this helps... someone!

Hi I have been using NFS win to linux to map window nfs shares to linux nfs shares just download user & group files from linux save to C and run the and map linux users to window users and groups works a treat doing this way no need for samba server all nfs file shares.

Just an idea

Darrennew has a point -- you can always share the files using NFS: BUT

NFS is a UNIX protocol (built on UNIX for UNIX) that is "inherited" onto Linux systems. As such, it is limited to UNIX access controls (rwxrwxrwx). To my knowledge, NFS cannot handle extensions to this (ACL's for example), so you'll be limited to the Linux File System's permission capabilities.

Samba, on the other hand, CAN handle ACL's, and has some fancy re-mapping of permissions (if you bother to turn it on). With Samba, you don't try to make Windows systems "speak UNIX", you try to make Linux "speak Windows" instead.

You say "Toe-Mah-Toe", I say "Toe-May-Toe" -- either way, we're making one system speak the language of the other! :-)

BTW: Just an observation... anyone looked under the covers of any of the NAS storage devices out there? I'm not aware of a SINGLE one that runs Windows -- they virtually all use Linux and Samba to share the storage -- some with RAID, some not...  The point is, if Samba wasn't stable, they wouldn't be selling these workhorse NAS servers with it on them!

My thoughts -- they're worth what you paid for them!
