The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Strongest iptable configuration?

Asked by Envoy2064 in Linux Network Security, Networking Hardware Firewalls, Ubuntu

Tags: ,

Hi,
I am new to Linux and iptables. I'm wondering if I can get "expert" verification of the iptables configuration listed in the following site: http://articles.techrepublic.com.com/5100-10878_11-5997057.html

According to that site, the following iptables configuration is "is superior, security-wise, to every single distro-default iptables configuration":

*mangle
:PREROUTING ACCEPT [48436:11233990]
:INPUT ACCEPT [48436:11233990]
:FORWARD ACCEPT [0:0]
:OUTPUT ACCEPT [29730:6162034]
:POSTROUTING ACCEPT [29730:6162034]
COMMIT

*nat
:PREROUTING ACCEPT [391:49336]
:POSTROUTING ACCEPT [1793:110951]
:OUTPUT ACCEPT [1793:110951]
COMMIT

*filter
:INPUT DROP [0:0]
:FORWARD DROP [0:0]
:OUTPUT ACCEPT [1418:147349]
-A INPUT -i lo -j ACCEPT
-A INPUT -m state --state ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT
-A INPUT -p tcp -m tcp --dport 22 -j ACCEPT
-A INPUT -p tcp -m tcp --dport 631 -j ACCEPT
-A INPUT -p all -s 127.0.0.1 -d 127.0.0.1 -j ACCEPT
-A INPUT -j DROP
-A OUTPUT -o lo -j ACCEPT
-A OUTPUT -p tcp -m tcp --sport 22 -j ACCEPT
-A OUTPUT -p tcp -m tcp --sport 631 -j ACCEPT
COMMIT

So my questions are:

- Is it true that this is superior to most linux distro default configs?
- Will this configuration enable "stealth" mode?
- Can anyone explain what each block of text means? Is there any way to verify this using more official documentations?

Any insight into this will be much appreciated!Start Free Trial
