I suggest you install and run "htop".
It is a very nice alternative to "top" and it manages quite better threads, cores and cached RAM. It is fully configurable with keyboard shortcuts and mouse.
To see exactly what's taking you most CPU run it then type F2 (Setup), under Display options select both Hide userland threads and Highlight program "basename", type F10 (Done).
You can also see which processes are using most RAM (or other resources) with F6.
