Question

Missing Sharing and Customize Tab in Windows Explorer

Asked by: jrtsan

No security tab (Sharing or customize tab) when I right click any folder: therefore I cannot share/change icons, etc
Windows XP home sp2
I followed directions in this post: http://techrepublic.com.com/5208-6230-0.html?forumID=101&threadID=203315&messageID=2114895
by user  BlackCurrant where he had the same problem.   Here is what I have tried

Convert compter from 32bit to NTFS
unchecked file explorer/advanced options so it does NOT use simple view
checked Registry - can't see anything new there under explorer
Rebooted in safemode and security tab did not show up there in properties
Of course, made sure I am an administrator.  I had deleted my other administrative profile and perhaps that is part of the problem.

I can NOT find any link in administrative tools for my policy editor nor will it show up in the run menu with gpedit.msc like I have at work.

Any other ideas?  I just want my tab back!

Thanks in advance,

James

Also, http://www.windowsnetworking.com/kbase/WindowsTips/WindowsXP/UserTips/TroubleShooting/WindowsXPCommonProblemsandGotchas.html

You may have to search for "security tab" or something like that on the page.

Hi Orangutang,

Checked out both links, I'm shocked to see windows home does NOT have file sharing like my work pro version.  This sounds crazy!  How am I supposed to share folders over my home network and how can I customize my icons?
What happened was I had a xp professional system before at home, then last week the motherboard fried so I'm waiting for them to replace it and took out my data drive with all backups from that operating system and I put it into another computer (that has xp home).  The shares I setup still work but I can't make new ones nor change icons (a useful feature to me as I have LOTS of data and folder customizing helps me)

Please tell me how I can do these two things now without a tab OR a way to edit my registry to get these tabs back! (preferred).  I hope vista does not leave things out . . .

Koquito,

great idea!  I can't download it!  I tried every single link on that page and then did searches for scm and the .exe file but could not figure out how to download the darn thing.  Also, will this get my custom tab back too?

Thanks
James

try this one then http://www.misec.net/forum/board/FAQ/1144075199
it is basically the same utility.

orangutang..it seems that your link also points to the same tool, so I guess that's another possible link

HI Koquito and Orangutang,

Well, I followed the excellent instructions at your above link and sure enough, it made a tab called security.  I mistakenly read that the "sharing tab" is also called a security tab which I now realize is different.

I still can't share any folder on my home network although I do know how to add all users to my group objects and let them have permissions to change/write/read etc that did not make any folder sharable nor do I really want everyone to be able to do this for security reasons (could add another object or person but that gets into active directory and I know how to use it but not add it and I'm not on a server)

I just want to share a folder and change it's icon, easy in professional and amazingly hard in home.

I'm increasing points for this (I thought simple) problem and will give part to you both already for solving a security tab I guess won't work but I asked for it!

Jrtsan,

http://winhlp.com/WxNetwork.htm#Simple_file_sharing__Guest_account__and_anonymous_access_problems
Check this link and look in it for "Windows XP Home Edition has simple file sharing only" and "Simple file sharing, Guest account, and anonymous access problems"
You might need to run the Network Setup Wizard as astaec is suggesting above, you have to be aware that unfortunately in terms of file sharing Windows XP Home and Pro are quite different.

Hope to hear from you soon

HI Koquito and Astaec,

Good ideas - Astaec, I read the links from microsoft and step 7 shows clearly in their picture that when they right click on home edition it shows sharing and security as a choice on the right click (maybe not as a tab on properties it does not show/say).  I don't have that - so I tried to re-setup my network and it had an error both times.  I started to read your Koquito but I need to read it again as it is a little harder for me to follow.

Strange thing:  I am already sharing the same folders I shared before and my printers.   I never had to create a network setup like my first time in xp pro edition and now it just gives me an error when I try to do it again. THat must be part of the problem.  My router of course remembered all it's settings as do my two laptops that connect to it and the files on this machine.  Shares fine with files already set for sharing.  scratching my head here.

HI Tolomir,

I have not abandoned this question and am still trying to solve it but I'm afraid my helpers are no longer responding.  I still can't get a sharing tab.  If you must close it then give equal points to all three since I appreciate them helping me:  Koquito, asteac, and orangutang.  Select as best answer asteac's because I think he is on the right track but something is not working right on one of those 8 steps.  Do you want me to re-open the question and close this one?  Thanks

Jamses, wishing I could share again . . .

by: jrtsanPosted on 2007-03-31 at 11:09:52ID: 18829149

I added the qos packet scheduler as per the link asteac gave me, restarted again, and still had nothing.  I then accidentally right clicked my entire D drive and lo and behold it DOES have sharing and security on it.  I shared it and the entire drive now comes up available which kind of helps me but not quite.  I really wanted to just share a few folders inside of my d drive, not the whole thing.  And no, now that I've shared it the inside folders still do not show a sharing tab either by right clicking nor by properties.  My recommendation to anyone who has windows professional installed and your mother board gets fried is to put your HD's back into another xp professional computer and NEVER into an xp home version which is obviously lacking some features I thought were basic to xp.  If anyone ever finds a way to solve my real problem of finding shared tab on xp home for ALL folders, not just the HD, please let me know.

Thanks to all those who helped.
James

after getting to read similar questions I found out that xp home evidently does NOT have a sharing tab on on individual folders, just drives which must mean that you can only share whole drives, not individual folders on xp home which is crazy!

Sorry for the delay, have been swamped on a project.  Are all drives configured as NTFS where you're trying to share folders???

This may shed some light....
Notes
• In Windows XP Professional, the Everyone group no longer includes Anonymous Logon.

• You can set file and folder permissions only on drives formatted to use NTFS.

• To change permissions you must be the owner, or have been granted permission to do so by the owner.

• Groups or users granted Full Control for a folder can delete files and subfolders within that folder regardless of the permissions protecting the files and subfolders.

• If the check boxes under Permissions for user or group are shaded or if the Remove button is unavailable, then the file or folder has inherited permissions from the parent folder.

• When adding a new user or group, by default, this user or group will have Read & Execute, List Folder Contents, and Read permissions.

This was a new piece of info for me, so sharing as well.

Synopsis and source follows:

If you upgrade a computer that is running Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, or Windows Millennium Edition to Windows XP Professional and that computer is logged on to a domain, if that computer has share level access turned on and joins the domain while the Setup program is running, the computer starts with Simple File Sharing turned off.
