Remote User's Domain Login gets message: System could not log you on. Domain XXX not available.

Remote user's laptop that was originally setup on our domain.  (Perhaps after automatic updates) seems to have lost locally cached security credentials.  Use cannot login.  Using local administrator login: I've setup VPN (and verified VPN worked.)  Then [x] Login using Dial-up networking & selected the VPN-name.  It tries... in about 40 seconds,  same message.
