Question

NTVDM CPU has encountered and illegal instruction

Asked by: frodehoe

Hi! I recently got this error message.
C:\Windows\System32\svchost.exe
NTVDM CPU has encountered and illegal instruction. Choose 'Close' to exit the program.

It pops up with a MS-dos window once in a while. I've run CCleaner and ADaware without any help. Please find attached the Hijackthis log and Screenshot of error message
Any suggestions? Thanks in advance for your help.

Don't see much here...

Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->Settings->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if found:

OneStepSearch

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following if they still exist and hit 'Fix Checked' after you checked the last one:

O23 - Service: OneStep Search Service - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\OneStepSearch\onestep.exe (file missing)

Locate the following Files/Folders and delete them if they exist (if no location given, just do a search for them):

C:\Program Files\OneStepSearch\

Go into HijackThis->Config->Misc Tools->Delete an NT service and type in "OneStep Search Service" (type it in without the quotes) and hit OK.

If you still get that error, there's an easy fix for this. Just copy autoexec.nt from the C:\WINDOWS\repair folder to the C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder
