The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

The Mysterious ADVAPI logon failure

Asked by digitalpete in Operating Systems Network Security, Windows Network Security

Tags: advapi negotiate security guest null sid logon failure

Hello,
Found something that is disturbing (to say the least) on my server 2008 domain controller event log. Both of which occured today almost exactly 7 hours apart:

Here is the log entry:

An account failed to log on.

Subject:
      Security ID:            CORPHQ\administrator
      Account Name:            administrator
      Account Domain:            CORPHQ
      Logon ID:            0x3307198

Logon Type:                  3

Account For Which Logon Failed:
      Security ID:            NULL SID
      Account Name:            Guest
      Account Domain:            CORPHQ

Failure Information:
      Failure Reason:            Account currently disabled.
      Status:                  0xc000006e
      Sub Status:            0xc0000072

Process Information:
      Caller Process ID:      0x13dc
      Caller Process Name:      C:\Windows\explorer.exe

Network Information:
Workstation Name:      SERVER (This is not the real name, for security reasons)
      Source Network Address:      -
      Source Port:            -

Detailed Authentication Information:
      Logon Process:            Advapi
      Authentication Package:      Negotiate
      Transited Services:      -
      Package Name (NTLM only):      -
      Key Length:            0

All values are accurate, except for the server name, which I changed for security reasons. Does anyone know anything about this? I've not seen this in the event log before. What's more bizarre is that it's trying to use the guest account. Can anyone provide insight as to what the Advapi Logon Process is? Obviously my server recognizes it?
