I have a computer that my son uses on the office network.
The computer did not get its firewall / antivirus installed before my son went on line.
It now is infected with some sort of spyware / trojan virus.
It is XP Pro operating system.
I get a message when turning it on of:
WARNING SPYWARE DETECTED ON YOUR COMPUTER
INSTALL AN ANTIVIRUS OR SPYWARE REMOVER TO CLEAN YOUR COMPUTER.
When I tried to install Norton it just would not start.
Then I tried spybot and it would not start to install either.
Then I started it in safe mode and tried to install spybot, there was a message:
A DEVICE ATTACHED TO THE SYSTEM IS NOT FUNCTIONING.
During all of this I have not let it plug into the network as soon as we knew something was wrong.
so it has no internet access at the moment.
All programs have come off CD roms or USB stick downloaded by another computer.
Should I try to plug it into the network to get online access for a scan??
all other computers are protected.
Is there anything I could try that might allow me to get rid of the infection without a complete reformat??
