Install and Configure Squid proxy on Solaris 9 (Sparc)

Hi,

I need to install and configure squid proxy on solaris 9. I'd appreciate if somebody could tell me where to get the squid for solaris, and how to go about the baisc installation and configuration of squid.

I have to configure squid to control yahoo messenger access. Let me hwat pre-requistes I need to take care of.

You can get a Solaris Squid package from http://sunfreeware.com/

Install as you would for any Solaris package.

Do you *only* want Yahoo messenger to be allowed via the proxy?

Hi Tintin,

Thanks. I will get squid from the site. However, I want to know what are the pre-requistes to successfully compile and install squid on solaris 9, and then configure the same.

I understand that one some compiler like GCC on sun box is needed beforehand. Likewise, what all factors do I need to take care of.

Initially, I'm looking at configuring squid for yahoo access, but later on, I will be looking at deploying more comprehensive and specific acl's.

Do you have a specific reason for wanting to compile your own version rather than installing the package from sunfreeware.com?

agreed with Tintin, it is a lot easier to just download the binary package from:
 http://sunfreeware.com/

then follow the "Squid - Quick Start Guide" or "Squid Configuration Manual"
http://squid.visolve.com/squid/index.htm

also have a look at "FAQ" when you need a quick answer:

Hi,

I have installed the binary version on my solaris box. Now I need to configure it for yahoo messenger access.
Supposing I have to allow yahoo messenger access to every one within my network (163.122.X.X/255.255.0.0). What extra acl
do I need to add. Correct me if I am wrong:

Also, I need to configure the squid to look for 'dns_nameservers'....but when I set this variable, I get the error "nslookup failed"

Let me know if i am applying correct acl's, and how to add 'dns_nameservers' in squid.

Hi,

After doing the above-mentioned changes, I am again getting the same error "ipcache_init: DNS name lookup tests failed".

I disabled the dns_nameservers entry, but i am still getting the error.

Any idea why this is happening...and what is the work-around?

Looking to hear from you guys...

Check your  DNS client setup, you need to do the followings:

1. make sure your /etc/resolv.conf file looks like:

nameserver 123.123.20.5

replace "123.123.20.5" with your DNS server IP

2. check  your /etc/nsswitch.conf  file, and make sure that it has:

hosts:     files dns [NOTFOUND=continue]

# you can just modify the record to make it use files and DNS

(when you comlete step 1 & 2 you netscape, should work, you don't need to reboot)

3. If you had done step 1 & step 2 and it still not working, try:
to specify the defaulterouter:

vi /etc/defaultrouter
and put 123.123.10.1   in the file, replace "123.123.10.1 " with your router IP

or
echo "123.123.10.1" > /etc/defaultrouter

then reboot.

Hi Yuzh,

Thanks, the squid is up and running now. Now the issue is how to give access to yahoo messenger through squid.
The acl's I've applied, allow me to access the site http://messenger.yahoo.com site. But when I try to run yahoo messenger (after enabling "use proxy" setting), it just hangs on me.

ACL's I 've applied are mentioned above...let me know where I am going wrong.
