Question

Resetting console password through terminal server

Asked by: bayroot21

I am trying to reset the console password through the terminal server (serial connection)... Any idea on how I can disable this either from a hardware perspective (remove jumpers) or interrupts during the initialization process?

I think the server is running solaris 10

this is a V245

I think some functionality exists to access the LOM configuration once you login into the server using scadm.

Basically I power up the server and it goes through its initialization... ALOM is password protected so my question is how do I reset or disable this password. Similar to the BIOS password jumper or some hack on boot up.

Since I didn't have the root password for the OS or the password for ALOM I was pretty much hosed. I finally found someone who tried a couple passwords and one of them worked.  I think the problem is with the SUN layout you have ALOM and PROM... Prom handles all the boot configurations needed to reset the OS password. Unfortunately a jumper solution didn't exist and removing the CMON battery for 24hours didn't work either. Too bad there is no jumper solution that would make it easiest...

Anyway this is what I got back from sun:

To override the system's ALOM password, do the following:

1. Attach the console to the serial management port

Refer to < Solution: 214535 >

2. Bypass the ALOM login prompt and bring up the "ok>" prompt

 a.  Power 'ON' the server.
Refer to your server documentation for information explaining how.
 b.  Wait for the system to drop to the "ok>" prompt
Once Power On Self Test (POST) has completed following boot-up, wait 1 to
2 minutes for a timeout to occur, which will drop the system to the "ok>"
prompt. Below is an example of what you might see on the system console:
     Please login:
SC Alert: Host System has Reset
     ok>
3. Boot the system to the operating system level.

  ok> boot
Note: If the Solaris[TM] Operating System is not currently installed on the server, you will need to install it at this point.

4. Use scadm(1) to reset the admin password

  # /usr/bin/cd /usr/platform/`uname -i`/sbin
  # ./scadm userpassword admin
5. Return to the ALOM login prompt

Note: The escape sequence to return to the ALOM login prompt is "#." (pound+period)

  #
  # #.
6. Finally, test ALOM password access

Now, login into the "admin" account using the new password set in step 4.
