How do I set up permission to keep people locked in the path that was defined when setting up the ftp userid?

I currently have an situation where data is housed in a specific directory on a server that my client needs to access via ftp.  I want to set up a user id that will keep the client in the defined path and not allow cd to be executed.  The system is UNIX and currently the user id and password is set up but when I tested it I could explore many places where I don't want my client to be able to go.
