Question

PfSense or DDWRT on Symantec Gateway Security 320 appliance

Asked by: mxrider_420

Hi,

We have an old Symantec Gateway Security 320 appliance. I am curious to see if anyone has been sucessful in installing PfSense or DDWRT on this device. Unlike most appliances the stock Symantec firmware doesnt have an upload button for firmware, instead it pulls in all its updates through 'Live Update' so you see where my delema lies. Also the unit doesnt have a hard drive like Symantecs 5420 unit so i am not sure how to proceed. I surely would like to get DDWRT or perferably PfSense on this.

Any help appreciated. thanks

This will not be possible. The hardware of the Symantec 320 is not something which is supported by DDWRT nor PFSense.
PFSense is meant to run on typical PC hardware (i386 platform) which the security gateway is not. There is an 'embedded' version but with the same restriction. The 320 is a MIPS platfrom
DDWRT is meant to run on typical embedded CPUs and hardware, so this is close. But the security gateway is not one of them.
So you are out of luck here, except if you want to port it yourself. Problem is, there is little known about the symantec boxes. The 320 has some kind of MIPS processor, 64MB RAM and 8 MB Flash. Sounds good for DDWRT, but it has not been done. It should be reversed engineered and then DD-WRT ported. I don't see it happening, as Symantec stepped out of this market. So the hardware is not available anymore.

sounds like a challenge! The worst part is Symantec has it updating via Live Update server, there isnt a upload button, so it wasn't even like i could attempt a dd-wrt-micro_generic.bin file because there wasn't a way to do that, looks like it is fairly locked down.

Well, you can not just try a new firmware and hope it will work. It really has to recognize the hardware specifics. Otherwise you may have a brick in your hands. And indeed, there must be a way to get it on in the first place. I remember those boxes from a long while ago (sold some of them) and they where nice little machines for SMBs. But indeed, only Symantec supported. I don't remember being able to hack into them.

Thx mate. DD-WRT is a great open source project. Incredible what you can do with it for such a types of boxes. Get yourself a supported el cheepo Linksys or similar if you want to play around with it. I use one and have always been very surprised, including the stability of it.
