Basically, it pushes the patches to each machine from a single server. You can do it manually or at scheduled times. It then installs and reboots if necessary, completely automatically.
Since it downloads the updates from MS and stores them on the server, it cuts down on bandwidth usage, since you only download them once. Plus, it's faster, since the target machine's getting the patches at LAN speed.
