Question

Un-authorized access by Microsoft ?

Asked by: ascendit

As soon as I connect to the internet , Even when I have no application accessing internet, data start coming and going .

netstat     showed that the connection is with Microsoft.com

I checked the live updates that is closed.

I restarted the pc 5 times but same thing is happening again and again .
Installed a firewall , and manually closed the connection , it then stops , but started a few time with different IP but that too related to Microsoft (doing whois on IP )

sa.windows.com
tk.downloads.microsoft.com

one was with London Data collection center of Microsoft.

and two attempts were made from

Cable & Wireless CW-10BLK (NET-208-128-0-0-2)
208.128.0.0 - 208.175.255.255
Cable & Wireless CW-NET-208-175-160 (NET-208-175-160-0-1)
208.175.160.0 - 208.175.223.255

and one was with another IP of Microsoft.

I dont know if Microsoft ppl are too free to penetrate into end users pcs or what is it ? Any idea ?

sa.windows.com doesnot seem to be a valid page

tk.downloads.microsoft.com leads to http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/search.aspx?displaylang=en

Where do you see these connections going on ?

Have you checked your system thoroughly for virus and spywares ?

Also check your HOSTS file ... at c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc

svchost.exe is a generic process that a number of services run under - including BITS and wuauserv. You should collect the Process ID or PID to figure out which instance of svchost.exe we are looking at - in XP you can do that with netstat using the "-o" argument. In windows 2000, -o does not exist, so I would download tcpview from www.sysinternals.com to identify the PID.

Once we have the PID, we can use tasklist.exe in Windows XP, or tlist.exe from the W2000 support tools in Windows 2000 (support.cab on the Windows 2000 CD) to identify which services are running under that specific instance. Sample syntax and results from both are below. Additional syntax help for these 2 command line tools is as usual availabel with the "/?" argument.

All this being said, I note that both wuauserv and BITS run under svchost.exe. I'm going to bet that it is actually automatic updates after all - the service, not the configuration wizard...

even if the automatic update sare disabled in the my computer properties window, the service in the "services" needs to be stopped and disabled also.
Right-click my computer, go to manage, go to services, stop "Automatic updates" service, then select disable. That should do it after a restart. the other attempt's to connect from 208.128 is someone's isp probably a cable company (as indicated in your whois) they could have a virus, and it's just scanning everyone.
