PLEASE HELP! I think this is a security because even though I have McAfee online virus checker, I still think I have a horrible virus or worm BECAUSE the cd rom door is CONTINUOUSLY OPENING. It is driving me bananas! Can anyone please tell me what is going on?
There are absolutely no other symptoms that I can identify. I've pretty much cleaned the registry and done all the other maintenance that I could.

If you've got some dirt in the drive mechanism, the drawer will open or close, get to the point where the gunge stops it going any further, and then reverse, to avoid overloading the motor.
Try sirbounty's suggestion above, and boot the system, then enter, say the BIOS (normally by pressing F1 or Del or F10 - it'll say on the screen). Then see if the drive still does it. If it does, you'll either need to replace it, or get a bit handy with the spanners to take it apart to clean it. WARNING - cd drives can be fiddly, and this could be fatal to the drive.
You could also boot to DOS to try this out if you have a boot disk handy.
If it works normally *outside* Windows, but opens/shuts when windows is running, check out all the antivirus stuff above...

Press ctrl + alt + Delete at the same time to get the task manager up and see if there is anything running in the background that shouldnt be running and if there is end the task to it if not then the suggestions above are good ones. You can also go to :

Check it from safemode....... if its not happening there then it can be some background process or service causing this,
So do this from normal mode, Goto Start>Run>msconfig>Startup
now goto Services section, and tick Hide Microsoft Services
and now untick all those third party services
restart and now check if the same problem ??
if NO then u can re-enable each application\service at a time to trace out the culprit one !!
Otherwise check the cabling or better hook another cd drive and then try with that to check for the problem! :)
