The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Unidentifiable (for Me) Virus on my Computer

Asked by BenMH in Windows Network Security

Okay - I have decent knowledge of computers - not as good as many experts here, but far better than "the average Joe".  Two days ago I was infected with what appears to be something nasty.  From the looks of it, it is the Sasser or Mydoom virus.  I get the general shutdown message every minute and half or so "NT Authority\system - Windows mustnow restart becaquse the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service terminated unexpectedly" --- fine I can buy myself time with the "shutdown -a" command.

Running all programs that are designed to find and fix mydoom, sasser and other variants, they find nothing.  I am supposed to shut down the system restore, so that it can check the restore file, but when I go to do that, it says that it cannot be shutdown - to restart and try again.  Restarting yields the same results.  It seems whatever it is, it is hiding in the restore file (which is protected) and has blocked my access.

Also, the system will not load completely.  For example, going to MSConfig and checking the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) to try and switch that off, I cannot.  It says it is "starting", but never fully starts and if I select "properties," it does nothing.  I am unable to "drag" anything.  In addition, it has deleted all of my network connections, and even plugging directly into a network cable (this is a laptop), it cannot get anything, so I cannot get onto the internet to have anything else check.  It will not let me create a new network connection either.  But I do have up to date Symantec Anti-Virus and it cannot find anything.  Microsoft released a Malware/Virus Checker today that checks for mydoom, sasser and others.  I downloaded it on my desktop, moved it over on a USB port, and ran it - nothing.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.  It seems exacty like Sasser and others, but must be some variant - new or not, I don't know, but I can't seem to fix it, or even find it.  I'd like to avoid having to wipe the drive if possible.

Thank you very much for your help.
