Question

client VPN connectoid won't allow machine certificate to be used with EAP

Asked by: jwf1776

I’m attempting to setup a client to server L2TP VPN.  I’m getting the following error when setting up the client VPN connectoid: “Error 798: A certificate could not be found that can be used with this extensible authentication protocol”.

It is a 3rd party certificate.  The OIDs for the machine certificate I'm using are:
Client Authentication (1.3.6.1.5.5.7.3.2) Server Authentication (1.3.6.1.5.5.7.3.1) Unknown Key Usage (2.16.840.1.113730.4.1) Unknown Key Usage (1.3.6.1.4.1.311.10.3.3) I also have the 3rd party root certificate in the machine [trusted root certification authorities] store.

I've gotten the error on both a windows 2000 workstation (domain member) and a windows xp home (workgroup member).

how do I troubleshoot this?

Part of my initial problem may have been third-party Winsock LSPs

Event ID: 615  IPSec Services failed to initialize IKE module with error code may also be caused by IKE failing to initialize because of third-party Winsock LSPs.

but in the end, I still got the “Error 798: A certificate could not be found that can be used with this extensible authentication protocol” message on one winxpsp2 test comp that was a domain member

even though I was using an imported microsoft enterprise CA issued machine cert (that actually worked on another machine for L2TP) I also tried web server certs and administrator certs.

and yes it had the private key & and root CA in the trusted folder

in conclusion, sometimes L2tp worked fine when a machine cert was imported and sometimes it did work at all.  I could find no distinguishing features in the machines that worked and the machines that didn't.  Additionally I couldn't find a helpful log or event that assited me in understanding why certain machines would recognize a machine cert for EAP or L2TP.

for this and other reasons I concluded to use EAP on PPTP for client VPN connections
