Why is my modem trying to pick up now when I answer my phone?

Hi there. I run on Windows XP sp1 and I just recently got the update Microsoft Security Bulletin MS05-025 Update for Internet Explorer (883939), I have dial-up connection to the internet and it's on the same line as our phone and now when I answer the phone and my computer is on and I am not on the internet the modem is trying to pick up after I answer the phone. It didn't start doing this before I got this update, what should I do? Thank you for your help....Have a Great Day!

Greetings, renegadelady1 !

If you think it is the update's fault, uninstall it. Go  to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall 883939.

If it is the problem, check if you got a bad install.  Disable all other programs, including Norton Doctor and Anti-virus, and anti-spyware before installing the update.

It sounds like there is a dial-up networking server active on your computer.  It is designed to give a remote user access to shared files on your computer.  Usually the client must supply a password in order to access the network.

Hi there all and thank you all for your responses. By dumb luck........I have solved my problem. I have a fax/copier machine and used the copy machine and ended up having it set to "fax" when I was done. I had thought it had something to do with my computer, but not so. Thanks again
